How we rated the Irons v Wolves

|

Hughie hands out his marks

Fabianski: Quiet afternoon until the last 10 minutes or so when he saved a fierce effort from Nevez and was in command when balls were pumped into the mix 7

Johnson: No dramatics and defended well when called on but his crossing into the box left something to be desired 6

Dawson: The usual “steady Eddie” performance at heart of defence although Wolves aren’t the most attacking of sides 7

Zouma: Always looked comfortable apart from one hurried clearance for a corner but one block as Wolves went for one on one with Fab was quite magnificent 7+

Cresswell: Set up Antonio for the assist which led to Soucek’s 27th birthday goal and had a very good game at front and back 7+

Rice: Magnificent all over the park – hit the post and never wasted a ball 9

Soucek: Stabbed home the winner, got forward more and although not back to his very best looked more like the midfielder we know 7

Lanzini: Made a telling pass or one that counted most times he was on the ball and looks the natural starting player ahead of Benny at moment 7

Fornals: Asked to play down the left side and did a good job for the most part 7

Bowen: Very lively and linked well with Mikey in a clear tactical change from Moyes 7+

Antonio: Was given help with Bowen alongside and thrived as a result. Much more threatening than usual and set up Tomas for the goal. much better performance 8

Subs

Diop and Vlasic – extra time arrivals No ratings

Not sure which match you were watching Hugh. Antonio was rank. Usual appalling first touch and contrived to lose the ball nearly every time he had it. Soucek very slow on the ball. Overall they were extremely slow in possession. They used to move the ball around with some urgency. Now it is largely lethargic and predictable. Hardly any of them looked as comfortable on the ball as Wolves

Yes, it’s the result that counts and they defended pretty well. But let’s not kid ourselves this was a good performance. Lambs to the slaughter next weekend, I fear.

    • I was watching West Ham v Wolves and saw Antonio battle, provide an assist and soucek score the winner but there yer go 🙂

Thanks for your ratings sir Hughie. And grateful for 3 points to get up moving up again.
Yes, must agree with your fine ratings for our defenders today, sir. All of them nicely accurate.
But must appeal to you to kindly take off the sentimental glasses which your friend “Moysie” gave you.
Got agree with another writer who said Antonio, Soucek, Fornals and especially Bowen were bad today.
Within 15seconds, Antonio did 3 stuff-ups with the last ending in a yellow card.
The 2 wasted chances by Antonio and Bowen really cannot be excused, neither all the bad crosses from the ever-alert Ben J.
2nd half Wolves strengthened their team with 3 massive subs. Did anyone notice … esp “Moysie”. Wow. What a stupid manager we have that did not notice that, and quickly counter with appropriate subs of our own.
And then there were our lame ducks Bowen and Fornals who stood watching attack after attack been waged on their sides.
Sadly Bowen never even attempted a tackle whole match? Now if that was Benny ???
Yes agree with the sentiment, that we gotta improve asap. And this can only be done when we together with our manager, become real, and not cover up for our blue-eyed boys.
      Coyi. God bless West Ham.

Antonio rank? seriously mate. we were clearly better than a very good and in-form side. we have been decidedly awful over the last 8-10 weeks but this was a good performance. there’ll be a replay somewhere for you to watch and revise. strange

The ratings don’t show it here but for me the best two players on the pitch today for us were Zouma and Fornals, not sure how you saw DR was better. I also cannot phathom the score for Bowen for me he should have been subbed, our worse player by a mile, no more than a 4 for me had no affect on the game. I was delighted to see Soucek score but I am not convinced by him. I think if we had another midfielder in there like Fornals we would play even better. A good change of system and I would keep that system against Southampton rotating in players like Benrahma, Vlasic and Diop.

Best players today were Zouma and Lanzini. Fornals did well in his attacking moments but was playing in a much more defensive role today covering for cresswell and rice when they got forward, which also allowed Souchek to get forward more. So I think fornals sacrificed himself a bit for the team today which I think is also why Moyes prefers him over Benrahma in that left side role.

Yes we were better than last 5 games but it was virtually impossible not to be . . Results count for everything but performance has to be judged objectively . Antonio was awful . All huff and puff and absolutely no end result . Constantly giving the ball away or being caught in possession which in turn reflects on Bowen who got no service or decent ball to work with . The best player on the park was Zouma by a mile and Fabianski was on top of his game . .

    • AS OF NOW I AM TAKING OUT THE WORDS “which game were you watching” BECAUSE I’M WATCHING THE SAME GAME AS EVERYBODY ELSE AND IT’S THE MOST BORING AND PREDICTABLE EXPRESSION KNOWN TO FOOTBALL LOL

  • bubbles says:

surely ONE GAME AT A TIME AND OVER THE MOON are worse Hugh … Perhaps it is Spec Savers causing you a problem
