Impeccable Aguerd saves the day

By Gonzo

The list of events that can make me jump from my sofa is short.

It’s usually just a West Ham goal and a pizza delivery, but during yesterdays fixture against Newcastle, I found myself jumping for a very different reason.

Unbelievably, my excitable reaction on this occasion was prompted by a piece of defending by £35m summer signing Nayef Aguerd!

As saving tackles go, the one made by the Moroccan on Newcastle’s Callum Wilson was about as good as it gets. It was a good as a goal, better than a driving run or a mazey dribble and much more important.

Aguerd’s interception was a game defining moment and changed the course of a very tight contest.

Somehow he managed to not only catch the jet heeled Wilson, but also slide in and dispossess him as he was about to shoot on goal.

It wasn’t an isolated incident either because the left footed centre half was impeccable from start to finish. His reading of the game is outstanding, he’s dominant in the air, passes like a midfielder, has great pace and marshals his defence with authority.

I have to admit that I’d never heard of Nayef Aguerd before West Ham were linked with him. Apparently manager David Moyes was chasing him for two years before he finally got his man.

It’s clear to see why.
