West Ham United have produced a remarkable statistic under Nuno Espírito Santo which should give every Hammers supporter genuine hope that Premier League survival is still very much on.
Strip away the anomaly of the chaotic 5–2 defeat against Liverpool and the picture looks very different to the miserable start the Irons endured earlier in the campaign.
In fact, the contrast between the first half of the season and the recent run of form could hardly be more dramatic.
The victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage last night highlighted just how much things have improved for West Ham. It wasn’t just three valuable points — it was another sign that Nuno’s side have finally found some rhythm at exactly the right time.
And the statistic behind it is quite staggering.
West Ham have collected exactly the same number of points in their last eight Premier League matches as they did in their opening twenty-one games of the season.
Let that sink in for a moment.
A Remarkable Turnaround
Points after 21 games: 14 from a possible 63
Points from the last 8 games: 14 from a possible 24
That is a dramatic improvement in form and one that has allowed West Ham to claw back ground on several relegation rivals.
Between matchweeks 21 and 29 the Hammers have made significant gains in the survival race:
-
Seven points gained on Nottingham Forest
-
Twelve points gained on Tottenham Hotspur
-
Five points gained on Leeds United
It is a swing that few would have predicted just a couple of months ago when the Premier League table looked bleak.
And in those 8 games we played 4 of the “sky sports top 6”, though not sure if Spurs are still in that category anymore.
Actually, come to think of it what would happen to the sky sports too 6 if spurs are relegated? Would it become a sky sports top 5 or would sky sports find a new team to be in their top 6?
And now for the spectacular , beat Man City and Villa .
Great story Gonzo. Oh what might have been had we bought a striker and decent centre back at the start of the season.
