Individual behaviour spoils Europa League game

Supporters at the London Stadium were largely well behaved at the London Stadium last night with no repeat of the troubles seen at the Europa League game against Rapid Vienna.

Both West Ham and Rapid Vienna were fined  £50,000 for those troubles with the Austrian club banned from sending away supporters to their next group stage game.

Stadium safety officials were taking no chances last night and created a screened off buffer zone on seats surrounding all four sides of the 500 Belgium fans who turned up to watch Genk lose 3-0.

There were two isolated incidents on Thursday night with an away Belgium fan ripping up a white seat and throwing it towards the pitch.

Met Police officer Andy Sheldon confirmed one away fan was arrested for that offence at the Europa League group stage fixture last night.

West Ham fans were largely well behaved with just one incident of a pint larger being thrown towards the away fans from the west stand lower.

That individual from the home end is likely to be identified from CCTV footage and receive an indefinite stadium ban when caught.

Sheldon also advised “We also identified a few other supporters for offences at other home games, they will be coming in by appointment in the near future.”
