Iron unlikely to stage excellent midfield repeat
Ben Johnson’s fine performance in midfield during his last appearance for the Hammers is unlikely to be repeated with the arrival of Kalvin Phillips imminent.
Iron unlikely to stage excellent midfield repeat
It could only happen were there to be a major injury/suspension problem but it will make no difference to his contractual issue at the club.
He is expected to be offered a new deal over the next few days with Vladi Coudfal not in the greatest form and Thilo Kehrer now on loan to Monaco with a permanent deal expected in the summer.
Johnson’s form has improved markedly over the recent games in which he has appeared and his versatility is becoming a factor form the Irons.
He can play at right and left back, wing back and in midfield although it is on the left side of defence he will be more likely to be required with Aaron Cresswell looking certain to be on his way in the summer.
The Hammers have shown little window action in that position which may have helped them come to a decision on offering Johnson a new deal.
And should Phillips not agree a permanent deal in the summer, Ben’s obvious abilities in that area of the pitch may encourage the club to keep him long term.
Ben Johnson could one day even outshine Michail Antonio in the versatility department. I can see him being asked to play up front and taking the number 9 shirt. Who knows what he can achieve? Go Ben!
