West Ham United are setting their sights on Luton Town’s left-back Alfie Doughty as part of a major summer defensive overhaul, according to GiveMeSport. Incoming manager Julen Lopetegui has identified the position as a priority for improvement.

With Aaron Cresswell’s contract expiring and Emerson Palmieri’s inconsistent displays, West Ham’s left-back spot needs strengthening. Lopetegui, taking the helm for the upcoming season, is actively seeking defensive reinforcements.

Doughty’s impressive performances for Luton Town, despite their relegation woes, haven’t gone unnoticed. His attacking style, honed playing as a wing-back, offers an exciting prospect for West Ham’s attack compared to the options they currently possess. Several Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in acquiring the 24-year-old, who is likely to depart Luton as they drop down to the Championship.

While concerns exist about Doughty’s suitability in a traditional four-man defence, Lopetegui’s rumored transfer targets for central defence are expected to address those issues. Doughty’s attacking capabilities could be a significant asset for West Ham.

Doughty’s consistent form has even fueled talk of a potential England call-up. West Ham could provide him with a similar platform to that of Jarrod Bowen and Declan Rice, who rose to international prominence after flourishing at the London Stadium.

With a new manager and project on the horizon, West Ham believes Doughty would be a valuable addition. His arrival would inject dynamism down the left flank under Lopetegui’s leadership. The upcoming summer transfer window will be crucial for West Ham’s rebuild, and Doughty could be a key piece in solidifying their defence and adding a new attacking dimension.

I think you are doing the Right thing getting the two players for the defence but not to much money on then

Someone having a bubble Luton couldn’t defend , just what we need another hapless defender, if we are to reach the champions league I think we need to steer well clear of the bargain bucket

    • Chris says:

He’s not really a defender although he gets put there to poor effect through our injury crisis.
Perhaps C&H need do do some recruiting themselves and get better journalists.
He’s a decent left midfielder with a good cross and one of the players we fear losing.

  • Basvegas says:

To be fair, He’s not to shabby with his crossing and his dead ball prowess his pretty good. Been consistent for Luton all season, I can see why other premier league clubs will be looking at him. We need descent players numbers to fill the squad and the need to have home grown as well, oh and be able to stretch our budget. Good shout I say.

  • I'm not the answer to our right back problems says:

    Yeah make you right!
who would want a relegated player in their team. Oh one minute 🤔 second thoughts who would want a player who got relegated 2-3 seasons on the trot…….. Craig Dawson springs to mind, who would want him in their team. I’d take him back in a heartbeat btw. Alfie Doughty would be an excellent signing for us COYI ⚒️⚒️

Are you sure you are on the right site, all you do is criticise. Either make some constructive comments or go to what ever teams site you actually support.

    • Phillip Williams says:

Rather get an excellent played from a relegated side, than an average player in a champions league team (Kalvin phillips)
