West Ham have announced that third choice keeper Raphael Spiegel has signed a two-year extension to his contract with an option for a further two years.
The Switzerland international has put pen to paper on a new deal which will see him stay at the Boleyn Ground until 2018, with an option until 2020.
The 23-year-old keeper joined the Hammers back in 2012 and has enjoyed loan spells with Crawley, Barnet and Carlisle United.
The Hammers signed the then 19 year old Spiegel from Swiss side Grasshoppers for around £300,000 in 2012.
Spiegel made 17 appearances for the Swiss second-tier club SC Brühl SG having played 41 games over two seasons for Grasshoppers’ second team in the third tier.
Spiegel told WHUFC.com: “I am very happy to extend my contract at West Ham United and am excited about the move to the new Stadium. It is great to work with Adrian and Darren. They have great experience and you can always learn from them. It can only make me better. It is also great to work with Chris. Since he has come to the club I have improved so much under him. I am very happy to work with him and if I can carry on doing that for the next two-years I am only going to get better.
“Everyone wants to play and I want to get more game time and show what I am about. This is an exciting time for the Club and I want to stay part of the West Ham family. With goalkeepers you need to be a little bit more patient as only one can play but I believe I can do it. West Ham is a very good place to be at the moment and everyone can play to their best. The manager is doing an amazing job and let’s see what we can achieve this season.”
The deal will see him stay at the Boleyn ground until 2018. Poor lad is going to be very lonely.
