Martin Samuelsen has departed the club for Hull City where he has been snapped by Grant McCann who took him on his first loan spell when manager of Peterborough Unite a couple of years back.
ClaretandHugh revealed the Norwegian midfielder could be on his way to City over a week ago at https://www.claretandhugh.info/move-for-samuelsen-may-be-on-the-cards/ and the switch was confirmed this afternoon.
The 22-year-old, made his professional debut for the Hammers in a UEFA Europa League qualifying game against Maltese club Birkirkara in July 2015 before featuring in the return leg, has spent the last year on loan at hometown club FK Haugesund.
Samuelsen also featured 32 times over three seasons with West Ham United U23s, scoring 12 times in between loan spells at EFL clubs Peterborough United, Blackburn Rovers and Burton Albion and Dutch Eredivisie side VVV-Venlo.
ClaretandHugh says: Of all those who have been allowed to move on at the club this is the one that hurts most because Martin is a truly gifted player very much in the Hammers tradition. He has been in excellent form whilst on loan in his homeland last season and frankly this could be a big mistake. Martin has had a couple of bouts of sickness at the Hammers and but for that would have made many more appearances than the 32 appearances he made for the under 23s. Samuelsen has lots of skill and that a Championship club under a manager who knows his game should have come in for him demonstrates that he still has plenty to offer. It’s arguable that with the likes of Lanzini and Anderson available Moyes reckons he had sufficient players of that type. However, Samuelsen should have been given more time in our view given those debilitating illnesses and this is a switch we could live to regret.
Will we ever use wingers again under Moyes?
I think that the formation at Bournemouth could have been just because Moyes had to little time to work with the squad before that first game.
Sam might not be the last of our talented winger youths to leave?
