Irons’ nightmare midweek scenario

West Ham could well end the week in the relegation zone if a nightmare scenario unfolds.

The Hammers are preparing for their clash with Leeds on Wednesday, as they look to win their first game in five league fixtures.

But a defeat for the Irons could well see the Hammers drop into the bottom three provided other results go a certain way.

One particular six-pointer sees Nottingham Forest play Southampton, with Steve Cooper’s side currently 18th and the Saints bottom of the table.

Forest and the Hammers are currently level on points but David Moyes’ men have a much superior goal difference of -9, compared to Forest’s remarkable number of -22.

Forest winning the game and the Irons losing would see Forest leapfrog them, so would a Hammers draw combined with a Forest win.

Southampton have 12 points but they too can escape the drop zone if they win and the Hammers lose.

Put simply; the Irons really need to win in midweek.
