Irons rue Bowen’s penalty miss in cruel defeat

West Ham were left to rue Jarrod Bowen’s penalty miss as Liverpool won 1-0 at Anfield.

The Hammers were dominated for most of the first half but came back into the game when Bowen was bundled over by Joe Gomez in the box.

The winger stepped up to take the penalty himself but Alisson Becker guessed correctly and denied him low to his left.

Darwin Nunez actually scored the winner in the 21st minute, as he rose highest to get on the end of an excellent Kostas Tsimikas cross.

The Irons were second best throughout the first half until Bowen’s penalty but they were much improved in the second half.

Declan Rice was outstanding in midfield, while substitute Said Benrahma was an electric presence on the left flank.

Benrahma had a huge chance on the 69th minute, as a Rice cross found him unmarked at the back post. Bearing down on goal, he could only produce a tame effort and Alisson made a simple save.

While Kurt Zouma nearly scored an own goal around 10 minutes later, as he deflected a Jordan Henderson cross onto the bar, the big chance to level from open play fell to Tomas Soucek.

With 86 minutes on the clock, Benrahma jinked into the box and found Bowen, who was able to lay the ball off to Soucek.

He was six yards out but James Milner somehow managed to make a superb block to deny him.

The Hammers will feel they should have taken a point from this one. A bitter defeat.

  1. To be honest, if bowen hadnt of missed the penalty I wouldnt have known he was playing.
And who would have guessed playing a DCM on the right wing would mean you create very little!!.
