Irons Selection Mystery I ‘Really Sharp’ at Anfield Then Gets Dropped

The Inconsistencies of West Ham United’s playing styles and first team selection is certainly making life difficult for the squad: It can’t be easy not knowing if you are playing, on the bench or in some cases not even in the squad one game to the next. It is symptomatic of a head coach who is casting around still after two months having no idea what his best team is. This from Lopetegui who, remember, impressed the board at West Ham with his ‘presentation’ and ‘detailed research on West Ham’ at interview.

All very confusing.

When West Ham were being routed at Anfield, very few players escaped criticism: A couple of sources complimented Crysencio Summerville for his work on the left that night, The Daily Mail Giving him a 6/10 rating, noting he: “looked sharp every time he got the ball”. They also believe the young winger could bring “some much-needed excitement” to the club.

Jamie Carragher, no less, noted on Sky Sports: “Summerville has had moments in the game where he’s looked really sharp. Really good touches,”

So what does Lopetegui see, contrary to everyone else, that makes him ‘bench’ Summerville for the game at Brentford – especially leaving the winger on the sidelines and putting Carlos Soler on in his place at half time when Mohammed Kudus was taken off. I’m at a loss to understand the Spaniard’s flailing around in search of answers – it is as if he makes these random, spur-of-the-moment decisions. And I’m a big advocate of  our head coach.

In fairness, Soler did ok.

Summerville has been one of the brightest transfers of the summer and surely must start for West Ham. When he did finally get onto the pitch his shot at 81 minutes was deflected – on another day he could have won it.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

He lost the Liverpool right back for the third goal (and then Cresswell lost Salah). Pretty basic tracking back to be honest. Makes him a liability. Very good going forward as you say but he needs to be better going the other way.

  • David Moyes says:

    Patience….we will come good.
Lovely Sunday lunch today though so it’s all good

The pro moyes and knock lop at every opportunity is getting really boring

you’ll not be describing me, I think..’pro Moyes and knock lop’.. the opposite, Luke actually!

MT, thank you for sharing these thoughts on the latest WH 1st team selection + subs.
Without being sentimental, one must always try to be realistic as you are with names.
And add to the list, Todibo’s weak performance at Lvpool and Lop’s comment on him having to strengthen up, and next match… he is in the team?
Danny Ings remaining on the sub’s bench leaves another concern.
And another, does the senior coach have strong discussions with his coaches to come to the best decisions, or as someone says … a display by the “Spanish Moyes”
Let’s hope this mist clears and the settled WH 1st finally is visible to all … !!!
