Former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie believes the club should take inspiration from Aston Villa’s achievement last season and challenge for a top-four Premier League finish next term.
Aston Villa defied expectations in the 2023/24 season, finishing above Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham to secure a coveted Champions League spot.
McAvennie, speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, believes that with Daniel Kretinsky’s increased involvement behind the scenes, the club will be aiming higher.
He expects Kretinsky to push for a team that can replicate Villa’s success and challenge for a top-four position.
While competing with Manchester City and Liverpool might not always be feasible, McAvennie highlights the opportunity presented by the struggles of traditional top-four contenders like Manchester United and Tottenham.
He emphasises that West Ham must capitalise on such situations, just like Aston Villa did last season.
New West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui has a proven track record of achieving Champions League qualification, having guided Sevilla to the top four in La Liga for three consecutive seasons.
Frank McAvennie’s comments highlight the renewed ambition at West Ham, fueled by a potential change in ownership structure and Lopetegui’s experience. While challenging for the top four will be difficult, Villa’s success story provides a glimmer of hope for the Hammers.
OMG. Love ya Frank… but WHU is WHU and where we finished last couple years is about as far as it goes .. a trophy, not fighting relegation… enjoy the wins at Spurs and Arsenal and at home to Man U etc….
Please don’t go on about new manager stuff cos you be looking to get rid before Christmas.
You have messed up big time.
A club with the second highest average attendance in the UK needs .to know it’s place . I’m pretty sure we’ve all heard that recently. Stick to your own club . Let the whufc fanbase worry about us .
You’ve messed up big time . LOL . You even pretended to be west ham at the start of youre message .
