It turns out that West Ham might have indeed benefited from a stroke of luck in our recent clash against Manchester United. Referees’ chief Howard Webb has confirmed that VAR should not have called David Coote to review the pitch side monitor regarding a potential penalty awarded to us.

The incident in question saw Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt challenge Hammers striker Danny Ings in the box, leading to Ings going down. Initially, the officials seemed uncertain about whether Ings truly had control of the ball. However, the VAR team at Stockley Park decided to recommend a penalty, a call that ultimately led to Jarrod Bowen scoring from 12 yards, clinching a 2-1 victory for West Ham.

Webb has since admitted on ‘Match Officials Mic’d Up’, speaking with former Everton midfielder Leon Osman, that the VAR team “misread” the situation. According to Webb, “The VAR got a bit too focused on de Ligt’s leg, missing the context of the play.” It’s a rare admission from the head of officiating, but an interesting insight into the intense scrutiny around VAR’s impact on games.

If we’re honest, West Ham’s win was lucky as hell given Manchester United’s’ dominance in the first half, which put us on the back foot. On this occasion, West Ham were the lucky recipients of the VAR incompetence which ultimately cost Erik ten Hag his Old Trafford job. However, in the Premier League match labelled ‘El Sackio’, it could have turned out very differently for the Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui.

    Quick question
Why is this saga still being discussed? Is it because it’s Man U
Who cares…..we got the penalty, lucky or not end of
If that was against us, it would be swept under the carpet and forgotten about the next day
Iin conclusion we done them a massive favour by beating them and getting ETH sacked. Now look….they have a great manager, that could have and should have been ours…..

We never should have won that game it was no way a penalty but it makes a change for a mistake to actually benefit us it normally goes the other way truth is that had Man Utd took their chances in the first half we would have been beaten by half time it would have been a complete hammering so we got lucky the football we are seeing now is worst that it was under moyes and that’s saying something JL doesn’t seem to have any idea how the game should be played he’s a absolute idiot come on mr Sullivan get rid of him and put us all out of our misery surely the fact that on match of the day they felt they had to apologise for showing parts of it if that is not enough to sack him then it’s championship here we come

You don’t need to be in control of the ball to get a foul.

The VAR team saw a foul and called the Refs attention to it. He reviewed it a number of times and gave a penalty.

Web is not God and gave his opinion. The fact MU out played us in the 1st half has nothing to do with it, they didn’t score.

I wish people on here, authors and posters, would stop willing us to lose and stop bathing in our misery.

You don’t say …..we should of been 4 down half time ….
The clubs gone to **** altogether…all that progress gone …back to tin pot under achieving players and staff..with probably the worst owners in the prem ….maybe they should get some lessons on how to run a club of villa …they are ****ing streets ahead…properly run decent club …us are just truly awful top to bottom….keep taking the money you privileged morons

We could easily have been 4-0 down in the first 15 minutes against Man Utd.

Still believe we are the team every club wants to play next. I use the word “team” loosely as the players are not cohesive, don’t believe in the manager and most likely want him gone as much as the fans.

I have no idea how we won that game. I said it immediately and I’m still saying it now. Most teams would have had us buried before half time.

  • Carrick hammer says:

Gonzo Webb stated that at the beginning of last week
