West Ham Snap Up Celtic Starlet Cummings After Sensational Goal-Scoring Season

West Ham have confirmed our first signing of the summer transfer window with the arrival of Daniel Cummings, following the expiry of his contract with Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

The prolific 19-year-old Scotland youth international has signed a long-term deal and will immediately link up with the Irons U21 side for pre-season.

Cummings joins primarily as part of the club’s academy setup and was personally selected by Hammers sporting director Mark Noble. West Ham had come close to signing the young forward back in January for £500,000, but Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers opted to keep him at Parkhead for the remainder of the season.

Cummings inclusion in the academy set-up does come with come confusion given his reasoning for leaving Celtic park. It was widely reported that he had grown frustrated with Rodgers reluctance to use him in the first team. Therefore one can only assume he’s been given at least some assurance that he’ll get a chance with Graham Potters senior team.

Rodgers used Cummings sparingly at Celtic

The Lanarkshire-born striker enjoyed a sensational 2024/25 campaign, scoring 29 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions. That haul included six goals in seven UEFA Youth League games, helping Celtic reach the round of 32 for the first time in their history.

His outstanding form was rewarded with a senior debut under Rodgers in January, coming on against Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League.

Despite joining as a free agent, West Ham will pay a nominal training compensation fee to Celtic—believed to be significantly less than the £500,000 previously offered.

A very good prospect and for little money. He has a bit of a Tony Cottee about him sharp in the area . Let’s hope he can progress quickly into the first team squad

I hope I’m proved wrong and he turns out to be a fantastic signing and West Ham legend, but I can’t help but feel we won’t see much of this kid, he’ll be shipped out on loan somewhere and eventually sold to a Championship or League one outfit.
