It’s time for the board to let Moyes go

|

Match verdict by Hughie Southon

That was catastrophic and the only question that needs answering right now is whether there are gonna be three worse teams than us in this league at the end of the season.

What made it so much worse was that at times we played very well but couldn’t seriously threaten the Leicester goalkeeper.

And once again it was Moyes’ new signings who were more worrying than most of the others with Scamacca and Kehrer looking anything like Premier League players whilst at £50 million we have the right to expect more from Paquetta,

Scamacca looks very lightweight and not the bravest when a chance is 5o-50 or a bit against him – he is certainly not an accident amd emergency candidate.

I have now lost count of how many goals Kehrer has been responsible for in part or whole this season and once again he shared the blame for the first. Two passes by Leicester inside the penalty area,,,NO!

I also hope that Aguerd is better than he showed when forced to come on as sub and whilst Soucek was marginally better, his game is nowhere near its normal level.

Moyes, meanwhile, as a defensive coach has managed to see his team keep one clean sheet in the last six games and have now extended their number of defeats to nine – a position only equalled by Southampton.

We are one point clear of the relegation places after being told by this manager the R word was no longer in his vocabulary and it wouldn’t be on the cards.

Just words again like all the rest we have heard from him. I think he has made several poor signings – remember Emerson too and he has no answers.

On the strength of what we have seen he has to go and I would be happy were the board talking to him abut that to him tonight.

I agree, and it hasn’t just been this season either. We have been poor throughout 2022, with the exception of our European matches against a lower level of competition. Moyes did a remarkable thing, taking us from the bottom to the upper table, but other teams have solved us now, and Moyes appears to be distressingly lacking in new ideas. The question is: who could they bring in who would be clearly better?

  • johnham1 says:

100% he has to be sacked. It’s nothing to do with giving him time for the players to get, it is his ridiculous defensive approach to games, it’s his in game decisions and finally it’s his refusal to drop players who are completely out of form. He is not playing a system to get the best out of these players. Its time to pull the plug for everyone sake including Moyes.

    • NY WHU says:

We were more positive today and the result was the same. I agree that he’s not getting the best or anything close to it from all but a small handful of players.

I blame the “West Ham are Massive” chant. Ever since that started the Hammers have gone rapidly downhill. As the Ancient Greeks knew too well, hubris is quickly punished by the Gods.

Nice piece and spot on even the moyes lovers should now see the light and the board must sack him tonight stop making excuses before it’s too late to get in a top coach that won’t want a relegation battle which we’re in now with moyes. Getvhim out .

  • Browzer 19 says:

The quicker he goes the better, so out of his depth now that his system has stopped working

Well said Hugh, unfortunately he will not/ cannot change, and so giving him time just means relegation. Just can’t see him playing this set up and getting 26 more points from 20 games. We have no cohesive play through midfield, hence we fade away without delivering a final pass to make a chance. A very sad outfit, and there is no enjoyment or confidence on that pitch.

2010/11 – Moyes is a great manager for a smaller club. A club that is battling relegation. Moyes gets them into mid-table or even higher, on a shoestring with no ambition. Moyes instills a backs-against-the-wall mentality, a them-against-us attitude. This would all befine if he was the manager of a small club.”

“2010/11 – Moyes doesn’t have the tactical nous to be a top manager. He has struggled with team selection when he has had options to choose from. The majority of his big money signings have been bad choices, his tactics have lacked against better teams/managers, e.g. in Europe. Moyes is simply not cut out to be a top manager.”

We were the better team than Leicester today. Unlucky to lose I thought. Moyes needs to ignore all the online noise, the social media etc and stick to his guns. These are not bad players he’s bought. I refuse to believe that. You’re talking about three internationals for Germany, Brazil and Italy. They are not bad players and should be more than good enough for the premier league. They will come good. Just need to allowed time. Good time for a break now and I’m certain we will see a much better second half of the season and maybe a European trophy.

  • Budgie says:

    So who comes in?

  • Pessimist says:

Cannot express Hugh how sad I am that even you have come to the conclusion. I so wish your loyalty to David Moyes had been rewarded. Never a fan of Moyes myself, I want to hear who the next Manager is and quick.

  • Bella100 says:

Your looking through rose coloured glasses……
Paqueta & Scamacca absolutely shocking signings at massively inflated prices….
I reckon Man City are still paying Rob Newman to make the West Ham board look bigger clowns than what they actually are……..

  • sidthehammer says:

Good article, crystal clear Moyes has passed his sell by date. Not just his selection, but his refusal to use subs, if they are on the bench then should be good enough to come on, particularly when losing, he only used two today, while Leicester changed all theirs by 69 mins. He is a stubborn character who would never accept the blame, he was cheap and unemployed, high time he is unemployed again

  • Pessimist says:

David Moyes in the name of mercy man. GO !

  • lokfaen says:

I’ve been a Moyes stay, but getting a bit closer to the fence. I have many conflicting thoughts here.. I will also say that I backed signing Pellegrini, but that was not because I disliked Moyes, it just looked like an upgrade.

There are several aspects here for me:
    – Moyes is not a relegation type managers, he will be able to take a team challenging for European spots
    – Moyes refuses to change his system, and his subs are questionable
    – Changing managers shortly after signing several expensive players usually hasn’t panned out
    – if we fire Moyes, who would replace him? And don’t give me that Tuchel / Poch stuff please, I would love them, but they won’t come to manage us (would also like Guardiola!)
    – Moyes saved us from relegation twice. He got our expectations up, but it’s not like we haven’t been in this situation before (and guess who saved us?)
    – we start every game slow, and only start competing with 10-15 minutes left, I dont understand why this is. Maybe Nobes needs to visit the dressing room right before kickoff?
    – we HAVE been a bit unlucky, and could’ve easily been mid-table, however, bad luck is becoming a trend so how long can we call it bad luck?

All in all, I still want ti give Moyes time, but I’m getting increasingly insecure. Stability is good, and I don’t believe we’ll get relegated so I’d say stick with him, see what happens in Conference and let him see through this season and start of next season (*subject to change)

    • blimeylimey says:

      With you there Lokfaen,
Now is not the time to change coach/manager.
IMHO Moyes is in the process of changing tactically, he’s brought in players to support a 3-4-3 (Fashion of the day in EPL) and injuries have delayed the process…

  • SelsdonHammer says:

I agree and will repeat my posting from earlier today before Brentford won at Manchester City with Toney scoring twice… “for those who want to know a potential replacement, look no further than across London at Brentford – and he can bring Ivan Toney with him”.
Moyes has done a great job for West Ham but that was then and this is now, certainly before £170M was spent. He just seems incapable of transforming this team into an attacking force and appears to have run out of ideas.

  • Carthorse says:

Only three team in the PL have conceded fewer goal in than us. Only three teams have scored the same or less than us, yet we are 15th in the league. It just goes to show that the problem does not lie with the defence.

FFS if an idiot like me can see the problem and the manager can’t god help us!

  • hoolio says:

Makes you wonder if Stuart Pearce’s influence on Moyes is being missed ?? Although I know the rot set in half a season before he left.
Anyway we were relegated in 2003 with a (slightly) better team and a questionable manager
Too good to go down?? Obviously not then – so what’s different now?
Well, apart from having the gift of a six week break in which to have a complete reset by hiring a decent manager, playing 2-3 friendlies right before welcoming back 5 world cup absentees in late December ready for a 2nd half of the season push for the top 8…but of course to do this the board need to act NOW

  • Gazza says:

I think we have to many players out of form, our movement off the ball is terrible, our crosses are delayed getting into the box and never end up on the head or at the feet of our players! So frustrating to watch! I think it’s unfair to pick out the new players, I thought Kehrer did well he was up and down the pitch and made some good tackles as well as probably making the best two crosses into the box from out wide. Scamacca has had no decent service, he was also trying to make runs behind but the ball was never delivered, to him, instead it was passed back and sideways allowing Leicester to get 11 men behind the ball. He is a big target but no one seems to find him in the box. I would say our worst players were Soucek who can’t seem to pass at the moment, Bowen kept going down and had no impact on the game, plus Cresswell another one who gives the ball away and could have done better marking for the first goal.

  • nursejeff says:

What we have is a one trick pony manager. Geeez it’s obvious that Antonio running into the channels and Scamacca with his skill set would be trouble for any defence. Bowen has been awful the last few games as have many of the starters. Moyes is constantly preaching about not using young players, can someone show him tape of Arsenal this season!!? Always on the front foot, their young gunners are fast and furious and it’s awesome to see the speed at which they play! What do we have? Old, tired slow pathetic no energy build up play which allows our opponents to get 8-10 back behind the ball. The #1 reason we were successful was our play was fast, fluid and the players movement was superb now there is simply nothing good!! MOYES HAS SUCKED THE LIFE FROM THESE PLAYERS, Antonio wasn’t sick today he was told off for suggesting he and Scamacca should play together

  • Hammers in the blood 1 says:

Look the players are not playing at the level their capable of . The question is why , is it Moyes setting the team up wrong , too many games or do the players want Moyes gone ?

  • Bournehammer68 says:

It was interesting to hear Jamie Carragher defending Moyse and using his time at Everton as the reason for faith. Moyse left Everton in 2013 and football has changed a lot since then, sadly Moyse hasn’t moved with the times.
I see Bournemouth are talking to Marco Bielsa. He would certainly change things although his style can be a bit Kamikaze.

  • johnham1 says:

I woke up this morning expecting to see Moyes sacked. Hiw the board have not made the decision by now is incredible. Do they not realise that the problem is the manager. We have watched performances and results get worse and worse for the last 12 months. Why would anyone with a brain in their head think he will change things around. The board has to act now.
