I am totally bewildered by Nayef Aguerd’s decision to reject a loan move to Turkey and the Bundesliga.
Under normal circumstances, I would absolutely defend any footballer’s right to see out a contract agreed upon by both the player and the club. Danny Ings is a good case in point—the striker signed a three-year deal with the Hammers in good faith, has never agitated for a move, and is therefore completely within his rights to want to see out his contract.
However, Aguerd’s situation is not the same as Ings’. The Moroccan defender reportedly notified the Hammers’ hierarchy of his intention to leave shortly before joining his international teammates for the African Cup of Nations. Nayef then appointed a new agent who very publicly declared his client’s availability for transfer.
It wasn’t even an open secret that the £30 million centre-back wanted to leave West Ham; it was pretty much accepted as football fact.
Therefore, the club was completely within its rights to try and source a replacement, which is exactly what they did with the acquisition of Max Kilman. Aguerd has been available for transfer for the better part of 18 months, yet the often-promised mega-deal has never materialised. Aguerd seems determined to move from West Ham but the truth of the matter is, the biggest clubs aren’t interested. F
Frozen Out
To add further complications and contradiction, a close friend of Aguerd, has announced on Instagram this evening that his mate has been frozen out at The London Stadium for rejecting offers from Saudi and Turkey, and that the player is looking to join a new club in Europe instead.
It should be noted that nobody at West Ham has a bad word to say about Aguerd. All reports indicate that he’s a good teammate, trouble-free, and, with the exception of a brief period before AFCON, always available to train and play.
Nonetheless, for whatever reason, the centre-back wishes to leave West Ham. So it is quite surprising to find out that he’s rejecting the opportunity to play first-team football elsewhere when there is clearly no chance for him to feature in the first team for the Hammers.
Wolfsburg or Galatasaray may not be Aguerd’s first choice, but evidently the clubs he wishes to join are not interested in signing the player. The absence of any transfer bid from his preferred destination has left the player in limbo, so one would have thought he would be delighted with an exit route and the opportunity to prove himself again.
Things can change quickly in the transfer window, and I expect them to do so. As things stand, Nayef is in a position where he won’t play football and will just collect his money, which was never really the plan.
He’s a talented player who has painted himself into a corner from which he appears unwilling to escape. Hopefully, a compromise can be found because the current situation suits neither the player nor the club.
Seems to have a very high opinion of himself that not many if any share. Liked him when he first came but is now one player I would be happy to see the back of.
The other difference between Aguerd and Ings is that he has an international career. If he doesn’t get a move and he is frozen out at West Ham he risks losing his place in the international team and possibly not being able to get back in.
One of the biggest disappointments West Ham have bought. As one of the writers on C&H pointed out the other day, how Killman has started his West Ham career is what we were expecting but never got from Aguerd.
One wonders if his agent believes that there is a deal to be done with a Saudi team. That obviously could be a big pay day for agent and player. However the Saudi window only closes a few days after the English one this year so time is still tight.
Just a little reminder that West Ham rejected loan deals from Milan, AS Roma and Athletico de Madrid earlier on and were set on only accepting to sell him to recoupe his initial transfer fee. It looked like they were focusing mainly on Saudi, UAE clubs knowing full well that the player had no desire to play for those clubs. Now it seems they’re cornering him and scrambling with any offer that comes in; so good for him if he’s standing up for himself! Again, neither Aguerd nor his representatives came out with an official statement. I wouldn’t make any assumptions from an instagram story reacting with emojis to a publication from a dodgy football news account ! Because that’s all his friend did: no statement, just three emojis! And thank you for your objectivity on reporting this Gonzo, it is really appreciated 👍.
If it wasn’t that whu needed money for JLo’s final transfers (Soler and Abraham) Aguerd to stay.
Changing his position to l/bk as cover for Emerson with possibility also as additional c/bk.
He’s an international and intergating him in to give option of 4 c/bks/2 r/bks and 2 l/bks would be acceptable.
Whether he wants to remain a back up man is another thing.
Obviously it probably won’t help his international career.
What happens if Kilman gets injured?
on this story, Gonzo…sorry. if Nayef didn’t say the words “I’ve been frozen out”, then you should not be using them in inverted caps in the heading
Absolutely right. Presenting the headline as a direct quote from Nayef is misleading, bordering on dishonest. Sadly, such sensationalism is not unusual in the race for ‘clicks’ and obviously works……….. given that we both succumbed!
When did he say “I’ve been frozen out”. I haven’t seen an interview anywhere, or was it in a French newspaper or something?
Almost like he isn’t trying to transfer and y’all are just making up rumours as usual 😂 You’re literally making up stuff out of thin air he has never once made an effort to transfer and his agent has never spoken on him publicly except to say he’s joined them. Show your evidence for once hey Gonz. But you won’t because then you couldn’t swindle everyone for a “job”
Please. if you really don’t like it here, maybe move on? No need to be unpleasant.
I’m sure you would prefer any critics to “move on” and say nothing, allowing you collectively to continue with your sensationalising untruths. Most people will be of the opinion that unprofessional journalism, if journalism is the right word, should be challenged and called out.
If comments made are contradicting your fables then why have a comment option? Everyone has a right to an opinion, and like the above have said, you have no proof whatsoever that Aguerd has said these things
