Jenkinson day done at Boleyn? – fans react

|

jenksClaretandHugh suggested that the absence of Carl Jenkinson from the Irons team versus Stoke on Saturday may mean his day is  done at West Ham.

The Arsenal loanee has now been left on the bench for the last two games with James Tomkins keeping the right back position despite the absence of Winston Reid through injury.

Here’s how the fans at ClaretandHugh’s site and Facebook forum @ https://www.facebook.com/groups/363174467150521/ reacted.

  1. Yes, you can’t argue with that – Jenkinson has been poor so far this season and to be left out today is a real slap in the face from Bilic.

I don’t know about Jenkinson, he’s obviously athletic and can really cover the ground but his confidence is completely shot, he seems slow of thought and hesitant, often turning to play a back pass when under no real pressure The couple of balls-ups he’s made seem to have destroyed his confidence, the crowd get on to him and it’s a vicious circle. He’s going to have to toughen up and win back his pace.

Tomkins is not a full-back, he hasn’t got the legs or ball skills required – he’s just about getting away with it, but only barely. Right-back is a problem position at the moment!

  2. Agreed, JT is a stop gap,at right back, we will have to find a new one next season,.
We do however have Reece Burke who played in that position in the Europa matches, he may be able to claim the spot next season.

  3. theres a couple at Burnley and Leeds it could be worth looking at

  4. Most fans were dubious after last season when he was at fault for many goals,he can be used as a backup defender the same as Ginge just a bit expensive,
But it’s important that Tomks come on as a RB or we buy in the summer,Johnson was a central defender when first at our club in fact when we sold Rio as fans we were told he was the brilliant CH that was going to take his place,
Clubs have made bigger mistakes buying players in the past lucky we only loaned,
Let’s hope Antonio who played with promise today is the natural replacement for Moses his attacking play only lacked goals and the final ball, but his defending and effort already is better than Moses,
Great to see with Jenkinson on the bench our team with 5 normal first team starters missing
    Play with so much promise
Also great to be entertained again even if we did not win unlike Man U or Sunderland fans

  5. Pity no one listened to some of us on here during the summer, it was quite obvious last season he was not a premier league full back. IMO I believe we have a cracking RB at the club in young Oxford. Again no one seems to be listening to this. But BUBS I agree its been to be entertained again and fair play to Slaven for leaving Jenks on the bench. I would also leave Carroll on the bench and I would seriously consider offloading him in January and replace him with the style of CF we need, pace and power.

    Niall McDonald
Niall McDonald got to be honest, I don’t want to sit watching Tomkins learning to be a right-back. painful watching him trying to get forward, worse watching him struggle to get back. poor crosses, doesnt play the pass down the line, doesnt overlap. even wasted at least 1 of the last few minutes trying to take a throw-in. i see the value in the away games at the ‘big’ teams where we’re more defensively set, but today, showed a lot of weaknesses.

    Niall McDonald
Niall McDonald was surprised Stoke didn’t attack him more

    Rich Sprent
Rich Sprent Nope. Centre back playing fullback. Not progressive when everyone is fit. Not the answer. Only ever a plan B or when defence first is required. BUY. A. PROPER. FULLBACK.

    Stuart Mowle
Stuart Mowle I have said several times that when Tomkins plays at RB position we often have a great result. Jenks can score a goal and assist but defence is stronger with Tomsk at RB so my vote sa

Jenkinson is the best right back we’ve had attacking wise since glen Johnson probably. At a time when we are relying on Andy Carroll to provide the goals, who better to get up the wing and stick the crosses in for AC? Jenkinson has only started about nine games and he scored in two of them helping us to the points. He also messed up in a couple of games and got sent off and was out for 3. He came back from injury at start of season and wasn’t quite at the levels of last year but hasn’t had a good run of games to build his match fitness or confidence. The reason he is getting stick this season is because he is now seen as Arsenal or will return to Arsenal because he’s signed a five year and we won’t pay 15 mil. Shame for the lad because he’s one of the fastest in the league and is still very young with potential and room for improvement. shame because in a fast counter attacking team he would be perfect for us as he was first half of last season when we had Valencia and sakho playing the channels and when cresswell or jenkinson got forward Valencia sakho would cut inside and cresswell or jenkinson would cross the ball in for a headed goal. Sakho got loads with his head I remember.

Not sure what Bubs is talking about but nothing new there!

I’ve got no idea about Oxford , I’ve only seen him playing as an auxiliary defensive midfielder – to play full-back nowadays you need to be a proper athlete, probably the most physically demanding position in the team, you’ve got to get up and down, overlap, be able to cross and be able to participate in any move that’s going on, on top of that you’ve got to defend when necessary.

We’ve seen Jenkinson play well, but not so far this year – he’s got the physical attributes but has lost all confidence in himself and at present is a liability. Somehow Bilic has got to build up his confidence and get him playing again, West Ham are paying millions for his services and Bilic has got to make that investment work!

Tomkins is ok whilst Jenkinson is having his mini-crisis but is not a long-term solution.
