“Low Risk Egan” | Cheap Option But Not the Correct Option

West Ham‘s pursuit of John Egan is someone who is dividing opinion amongst Hammers fans as can be seen in the comments section since he was announced. The experienced defender offers a cost-effective option for the club but it does have the look of a ‘just make do’ signing.

John Egan is a proven defender with experience in the lower leagues and at the international level. He clearly has his abilities but at 31 and coming off an injury, is he really a better back-up option than Kurt Zouma?

Signing Egan as a free transfer would be a financially sound decision for West Ham. The club would avoid paying a transfer fee and he is apparently asking for a relatively modest £30k per week. The truth is that Egan’s wages would probably be far lower than the reported amount.

Of the three free agents we were looking at Egan is arguably the least exciting option, especially coming off a season he missed nearly all of with injury as the Blades were relegated from the Premier League.

However, I do wonder if West Ham are spending money they don’t really need to just so a Lopetegui technically has four central defenders.

Not the correct option ? Build a better mousetrap. Who would you buy. Let’s be honest, you couldn’t expect to try to buy as many Players as West Ham were forced to do and expect to get them all. Sadly, due to the insane stupidity of Moyes and his wish for a geriatric army of a team, it was an impossible job to do in the time available. Congratulations to the Recruitment team for doing what they did.

Come on C&H this is the 6th article on Egan in the last 2 days! I know it’s the international break but do we really need to have the same thing repeated over and over with no actual news each time?

And to say “apparently asking for a relatively modest £30k per week” that is £1,560;000 a year which most of us, especially older fans worrying about fuel bills this year and families facing huge mortgage increases can only dream about. I would certainly prefer fewer posts with more content and real discussion points but that’s just my opinion.

Try reading back on your own comments Simon they were relegated when he was missing for the season but finished 9th when he played the full season could be a message in there somewhere

Agree with all above, especially the repetition. Whatever happened to trust in, and patience with, the new administration?
