West Ham United’s potential signing of John Egan is not a universally popular move as was highlighted by Gonzo’s earlier post about it stifling youth development. The Irish central defender is due to have his Hammers trial in a training game against Dagenham & Redbridge to see if he can earn a contract.
Whilst many would agrees that signing a journeyman central defender from the lower leagues is far from ideal, it wasn’t too long ago that West Ham did precisely that to great success.
John Egan shares many similarities with former West Ham favourite Craig Dawson. Both players are known for their aggressive tackling, commitment to the cause, and ability to provide solid defensive cover.
Egan’s addition would provide the Irons with valuable depth and the ability to switch to a back three when required. He could be used as a backup option or perhaps even as a starter in certain situations.
Signing Egan on a free transfer would be a financially sound decision for us. The club would avoid paying a transfer fee and could negotiate a reasonable salary.
The 31 year old will never be a world beater but his experience and quality could have a positive impact on our defence. His presence would provide a sense of security and whilst it might not be beneficial to the likes of Kaelan Casey, it could be a shrewd move.
The new Dawson, I doubt it but better than academy players who most likely never will make first team starter standard by basis of few of them do.
I’d get through to the Winter window with Mavropanos, Todibo and Kilman using Alvarez as a stand in if needed which might well be not.
I rate Egan better than Harry maguire how much was he going to cost us?. The most expensive is not always the best option
The new roger Johnson more like
Just what did they expect to learn in a friendly game of 2×30 minute halves of which he played one half complete waste of time
…or the new Roger Johnson?
