Liverpool’s stance towards Caoimhín Keller is understood better when put into the context of his position at Anfield. The shot-stopper – who is apparently West Ham’s number one summer target (according to certain reports this week, notably in the sun.co.uk) – would make an excellent upgrade or competitor for Alphonse Areola.
Because Kelleher has just one year left on his contract, the Irish International represents a one-time opportunity for Liverpool to cash in before his contract starts to run down.
At £20 million he’s as good a player out there this summer as the Hammers could find, and he fits Graham Potter’s playing style being very much a modern keeper able to play with his feet.
However according to Anfieldindex.com there is another factor driving Kelleher’s need to move away from Anfield:
“What further complicates Kelleher’s future at Anfield is the impending arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. The Georgian was signed last summer but loaned back for the 2024/25 campaign. He will expect involvement when he reports for duty, a scenario that could push Kelleher down to third choice.
Whilst funds are tight at London Stadium there is growing realisation that the number of players heading out of the door will generate significant transfer funds for Potter this summer: And with only Areola as a first line keeper, clearly West Ham have to strengthen their options.
