Beyond Kudus sale | One Hammer can step out from his shadow

The news late yesterday afternoon that West Ham had accepted a £55 million bid from their arch-enemy Tottenham for ‘starboy’ Mohammed Kudus could prove a difficult pill to swallow for supporters who are used to having nothing to do with their north London rivals.

Especially at ‘just’ the £55 million. Ranking (and rankling) probably far worse than selling Declan Rice to Arsenal – at least the Hammers got a decent wedge from that sale – Kudus will leave behind two seasons of contrast at London Stadium with both  ‘ the good and the bad’ on show – we can only hope that Tottenham get ‘the ugly’.

Replacing him will be, strangely, easier than many might think. The personnel are already on board at West Ham to minimise the impact of Kudus’ departure : In fact it could be the making of his successor.

We know the talent of Crysencio Summerville, played by Lopetegui as a left winger – is enormous and if Graham Potter chooses to use him as Lopetegui did, as an inverted winger, he can light up London Stadium. But he will miss the start of 2025-6 season whilst in the final phase of his hamstring surgery recovery. Which will allow ‘wonderkid’ Luis Guilherme to step forward into the spotlight and show us all what he’s made of.

Guilherme, according to Matt’s article last night apparently rejected a transfer opportunity to leave West Ham and head to Brazil’s Botofago: Good on him: Maybe he knew what was about to unfold.

Cometh the hour, cometh the (young) man. Now Luis Guilherme can step up out from Mohammed Kudus’ shadow and really show us what he’s got.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Is this the ‘Moany Minny’ club? Asking for a friend.

  • Kenny Irons says:

Joke of a club, but not a funny one…….
I’ve had enough of this Circus and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
    RIP West Ham United.

Trouble is Martin, you’re assuming professor Potter will select him. That’s something I have serious doubts about.

  • Matt says:

Sullivan couldn’t even get £65m for Kudus which was the bare minimum required to consider selling.

The club are exactly how Steidten described us, no structure, no clue and now selling one of our better players for £10m under market value to of all clubs Spurs!

We need some exceptional signings this summer. With Sullivan in charge of recruitment & player sales we know this is a false dawn.

Afraid not Hes now being sought by 2 to top European sides confirmed

    I don’t understand sullivan!
The player had a 85 million buy out clause,we apparently rejected a 60 million offer and then accept this.
Am gutted he is going to the spuds, he is a class act and he will thrive under Thomas Frank!
    They are laughing at us!

Agreed Martin, infact that’s surely what we bought him for, to step up when Kudus was sold. And if we ever get round to completing the Diouf deal then there is another option on the left side of midfield if required. I feel that if we can make a few smart purchases, Diouf & Elliott would be a great start, then we could be half decent next season. Not the finished article, but an improvement on the dross of the last 18 mths.

As much as I hate to admit it but West Ham have become a small time club compared to the likes of spurs arsenal and Chelsea,we’ve been run by small minded business men with no intention of becoming anything more,as a supporter the shine has corroded and until these greedy directors Decide to sell up I am seriously Worried that we could find ourselves in the championship for a long time

    • Matt says:

Forget Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs….we are now unable to compete with Palace, Brentford, Fulham and Brighton ffs!

We are a shambles and operating like a team that is just happy to remain in the Premiership.

Unfortunately we are spiralling downward and our expectations are now focused on survival instead of pushing for Europe.
