Leeds Transfer Interest Tests West Ham’s Promise To Fans

According to Football Insider, the newly-promoted side see the big Greek as the man to fill the void left by the departing Pascal Struijk. The report suggests it’s a deal that “works for all parties.”

Well… not this party.

We Should Be Buying Centre-Backs, Not Selling Them

Let me get this straight.

Axel Disasi has already gone. Jean-Clair Todibo is packing his bags. And other clubs now expect us to flog our best remaining centre-half?

Somebody, somewhere writing this story has lost the plot.

That scenario leaves Nuno Espírito Santo staring at a back line held together with sticky tape and Max Kilman. Yes, the youngsters may get their Championship chance, and good luck to them. But you don’t hand a promotion campaign to teenagers and simply cross your fingers.

You build around your best players.

Right now, Dinos is one of them. In fact, he was last season’s Hammer of the Year.

The “Easy Money” Argument Doesn’t Wash

The suggestion is that Mavropanos represents easy money for The supposedly skint Hammers – one more sale to get a sluggish summer moving.

I understand West Ham need funds. Fernandes brought in a tidy sum and Crysencio Summerville looks likely to follow him out of the door. Fine. But there’s a difference between selling to strengthen and selling because you’ve run out of ideas. It’s a bit like flogging the family car the week you need to drive somewhere.

Losing 35 appearances and last season’s Hammer of the Year from a squad that’s just been relegated isn’t shrewd business.

It’s self-harm.

Not that I believe the story from West Ham’s end, at least.

Naturally, Dinos would relish the chance to play Premier League football again, and who could blame him? Leeds can offer exactly that.

But West Ham are under no obligation whatsoever to do Leeds a favour.

Time For The Owners To Put Their Foot Down

Here’s the thing.

It was the West Ham hierarchy themselves who pledged to keep their key players.

They held their nerve over Fernandes. They’ve dug their heels in on Jarrod Bowen.

And only a few days ago they told Mavropanos, in no uncertain terms, that they expect him to stay at the London Stadium.

This is the moment to prove those weren’t just warm words for the supporters.

Sell Summerville, by all means. Move Todibo on.

But draw a line in the sand over Dinos.

Pledge kept, or pledge broken.

It really is that simple.
