Lingard a Lion again!

Jesse Lingard starts for England tonight against San Marino.

The Hammers star has been brilliant since his loan move from Manchester United and earned a recall to the national side.

Gareth Southgate has selected his team for the clash with the world’s worst-ranked side and he has named Lingard in his XI.

England will expect to win the game by at least five goals, so poor are San Marino – they are literally the very worst side in the world.

Lingard has won a total of 24 caps for England but will win his 25th tonight; he has scored four goals in that time.

He will hope to be back on the scoresheet tonight.

Declan Rice, by comparison, is on the bench for the Three Lions, with Southgate choosing to rotate heavily.

Rice is likely being saved for the games against Albania and Poland but at least he’ll be avoiding an injury this evening!

Full England side: Pope, James, Stones, Coady, Chilwell; Ward-Prowse, Phillips, Mount; Lingard, Calvert-Lewin, Sterling.

  1. The lady expert on ITV says Lingard will need to score a couple of goals and provide several assists in this game if he is to be considered for any other games. The competition for his place is ‘the likes of Grealish and Foden’. So, if Jesse gets a hat trick then his place is sealed for the next five years. If not, he’ll never play for England again.
She should know – she’s the expert on the telly.
Trouble is, Southgate will demand solid posession play without taking any chances. A low score will ensue. Jesse might not score. Doom and gloom.
Desperately hoping I’m wrong. Desperately hoping she’s wrong.
