Well that didn’t take long. As I wrote last night that West Ham’s transfer window would be revitalised with the confirmation of Graham Potter as head coach, I hadn’t expected the uptick to be so sudden.
Within a few hours, the rumours start to fly around concerning West Ham’s interest in Jonathan David from Lille (again) even though he’s not available until the Summer and therefore largely superfluous to West Ham’s critical striker issue this January.
One of the more absorbing stories is that of Marcus Rashford coming to West Ham on a loan this very month. Whilst this was initially rubbished when it first arose last year on account of Rashford’s massive wages, the latest news courtesy of football365.com is that Manchester United are prepared to subsidise a big chunk of his £300k a week wages, making him an affordable option for West Ham.
This could be almost dejà vu: A carbon copy of the loan agreement struck between the two sides in 2021 for Rashford’s team-mate Jesse Lingard. (Although with Lingard, the Hammers paid all of his weekly salary, from memory).
It was Lingard’s goals and assists, remember, that helped propel David Moyes’ side towards a top six finish in the Premier League.
Jesse Lingard’s loan spell at West Ham relaunched his career and even got the player recalled – briefly – into the England camp.
If Marcus Rashford could have the same impact as Lingard did for David Moyes’ side, with 9 goals and 4 assists in 16 games, Graham Potter could find his own fortunes rapidly on the rise. And how Rashford would love to relaunch his own career.
Whether West Ham can beat off interest from Euro giants such as Napoli, Juventus Dortmund and AC Milan remains to be seen: The player himself may well prefer to stay in the UK and could create a reunion with former Red Devil Aaron Wan-Bissaka who has re-ignited his own career at London Stadium. Memo to Steidten – unlike Lingard, can we at least have an option to buy in this loan please!
Give Rashford a go……play him through the middle. It’s just a loan deal until the end of the season. He needs a change of environment, and we need a good striker. It’s a no-brainer for me.
Marcus Rashford is a home loving boy. It might be a little too much for us to expect that he would like to leave the environs of Manchester. Definitely out of his lifestyle destinations would be Euro giants such as Napoli, Juventus Dortmund and AC Milan.
As Ian Rush found out, much to his surprise, Juventus play in Italy and they all speak a foreign language out there. He lasted a few tortuous months away from Liverpool but was mightily relieved to rejoin them until he retired. Anyone remember David Unsworth? He had to go back nearer home after his missus found out that West Ham were in London. Joey Beauchamp? Say no more.
Similar reasoning applies to Jarrod Bowen ‘wanting to join Newcastle’. That will never happen as well. Even if the captaincy goes elsewhere in the team, Jarrod will not be leaving.
So, a chance that Marcus Rashford might follow Stirling up to London, but certainly not abroad.

The trouble with Rashford is the whole media circus would come with him. So it’s a no from me thanks.
Bad move, he’s lost it , sulky , bad attitude and lazy..
Sorry don’t think we have any chance of signing Rashford on loan and realistically even if Man U agreed to subsidise large part of his £300 k wages a week(!) the costs would be extortionate for half a season. Last week C&H wrote that our finances were tight and we would have to mainly look to the loan market and the Championship for deals. So where would the extra money come from?
Although I want to see the board give their full support to Potter, we shouldn’t be spending a huge chunk of the available budget on one player who is unlikely to want to join anyway. If clubs such as AC Milan,Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli are interested, why on earth would he be interested in joining us especially when 3 of these can offer Champion’s League competition? Zero chance.
Don’t shoot me but i.think rash would be a good move ….we keep going for foreigners up top…..we overlook players like Chris wood who we all go no way…me included..but look at him at forest ..I think we need to try an English forward, who’s played in prem …if we took wood when Newcastle sold him I think with the creativity behind him like paq ..he would score goals …its working at forest again for him …we overlook these players thinking there not good enough.amd look for foreigners..But I think we need to start looking at players in the mould of wood and English..just my opinion….
weve already got our full quota of loans havnt we
Duh! No! We have no domestic loans,so we can bring two immediately.
Dont think so sonny Jim
OMG no!!
We don’t need someone to play left wing, Summerville deserves a chance there. We need a central striker, centre back and a mobile midfielder
Rashford looked long past his best in recent games I‘ve seen him play but give him a chance, if he’s willing to slum it in the East End, why not, it certainly did it for Lingard who then went and ballsed it up by not staying with us. A career ruined too early.
Regarding Graham Potter, I heard Harry Redknapp speaking to Adrian Child’s today on Radio 5 explaining “The West Ham Way”. He explained exactly why I was hoping that Michael Carrick would be taking the hot seat but, Hey ho, good luck to Potter.
It needs to stop with all these ridiculous rumours. Rashford to West Ham, absolute rubbish
I’m sure someone commented exactly the same thing about two weeks ago about Lopetegui getting sacked.
I know we haven’t had a good season but come on, Rashford is not who we need if we are to sort ourselves out.
His attitude stinks.
Agreed Darkhorse.
Ridiculous, he’s got Kalvin Phillips written all over him metaphorically.
