Link with ‘£18 million cheaper’ striker resurfaces for summer

Sometimes however much you’d like something to be false and ignore it totally, it refuses to go away. Links between West Ham and some of the ‘same old faces’ in the transfer window have a habit of coming round again and again but this one has started to have more of an air of authenticity to it this time around, knowing how Hammers’ chairman David Sullivan loves a bargain.

I saw this report last night and committed the cardinal sin of ‘hoping’ it was wrong – as a Hammers fan of 50 years myself – rather than simply looking at it with the dispassionate air of a Claret and Hugh contributor and seeking to make it known to our readership.

The links over the last few windows between West Ham and Callum Wilson are a little like groundhog day, yet here we are again with reports from talksport that “West Ham eye Newcastle star”. Please don’t shoot the messenger.

The difference this time around compared with previous years is twofold. West Ham will have no frontline strikers in the summer and have to bring players in, plus Callum Wilson will be available on a ‘free’ transfer as his contract at Newcastle will be ended. As beautifully summed up in Newcastle Fan site Geordie Boot Boys:

“Newcastle offered Wilson to clubs for £18million in January 2024, with West Ham one of the teams that were keen to do a deal: Of course, that exit did not transpire, and Wilson is still at St James’ Park 12 months later. Now the number nine could finally leave, but it will be on a free transfer. There will be no PSR boost, which is what Newcastle were searching for in January 2024. West Ham wanted Wilson then, and they want Wilson now. However, he will be £18million cheaper.”

However much we are sick of the sight of thirty-somethings on the bench and in the treatment room at West Ham and feel the club and supporters deserve better, these stories linking Wilson with West Ham will only grow more plausible the longer he runs down his contract at Newcastle and the closer to an exit he gets without an extension at St James’ Park.

Hardly ‘Graham Potter’s brave new world’ is it? But would West Ham fans rather have Callum Wilson sitting as a back-up striker on the bench than – nobody: That is the thorny question that I’ll just leave hanging.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Once again regurgitating an old story while trying to use the old cliché “don’t shoot the messenger” to distance yourself from it. It doesn’t work, the story has your name all over it. The reason Newcastle are trying to dump Wilson is because they do not want their own Danny Ings. West Ham do not need another “Danny” to replace the one who’s contract is finally up in June.

Not a chance with Potter in charge.

I’m sure Newcastle would be jumping for joy if they could off load Wilson

    I’d rather have nobody!

you mentioned Sullivan loves a bargain But it’s not a bargain is it when it’s a complete waste of money

Sullivan needs to show ambition and look at younger options . We will not improve if this is Sullivan’s stance . Potter should be backed not hindered

Load of nonsense. Potter has a brain and will ensure we go for decent long term prospects. It will need a bit of patience but I am confident better times are coming.

It’s a no from me we would have been better off showing more faith in mubama and we have our own Callum to come back from huddersfield to give minutes to

    It’s a no from me

Crock, always injured, too old, no pace! But very cheap! Sounds like the perfect Sullivan buy, will he never learn anything?

Right, because Sullivan is making all the transfers now? Doh 🙄

        Don’t waste your time FrankieMac,
Some posters are only interested in banging the same ol’ drum that “David Sullivan is the devil himself and root of all that ails West Ham”
