Loan move to Italian Giants goes down to the wire!

West Ham’s frantic activity in the transfer window kept going right up to the absolute last minute, as if three months wasn’t time enough to sort arrivals and departures: Maxwel Cornet’s 2025 summer was supposed to be a turning point.

After a turbulent spell at West Ham United, the Ivorian winger looked set to revive his career with a permanent move to Genoa following a promising—albeit brief—loan stint in Serie A. Under Patrick Vieira’s guidance, Cornet showed flashes of his old self, contributing two goals and an assist in just six appearances. But once again, injuries derailed momentum, and Genoa’s interest cooled.

Despite Vieira’s admiration for Cornet’s hunger and ambition, the club hesitated. Genoa reportedly wanted to extend the loan but only if West Ham agreed to subsidise a significant portion of his £65,000-a-week wages. With West Ham keen to offload the winger permanently, negotiations stalled.

Cornet’s heartfelt farewell message to Genoa fans on social media hinted that the door had closed—for now.

Graham Potter confirmed the player had no future at West Ham back in July when he said “He’s at a stage in his career where he needs to play regularly. At the moment it’s difficult for me to guarantee that.”

However, C&H can exclusively reveal that there was some late news confirming that a loan has been agreed with Genoa.

The Italian team originally released a video showing pop corn marking the return of the player, yet this was swiftly taken down. However, having spoken to a top source at West Ham, there has been an update “We think and hope the loan deal goes through. It’s complicated by the number of loans they are allowed. They will only be paying 25% of his wages yet we need him playing.”

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

Genoa Giants? But want players for nothing?

Continental clubs do extremely well out of the vast amount of money generated through the Premier League to a point where I think they almost expect their financial demands to be met. They appear extremely resentful that their own leagues can’t generate the same finances. This is a perfect example where at some point in Cornet’s career he was sold for an over inflated fee by I think Lyon to Premier League club Burnley. Having spent now 4 years under contract here and only featuring in 40 odd games over that period now has to go back to the continent where they simply can’t or won’t pay the fees that were demanded when leaving Lyon.
The guy is unable to command a place at a prem club. More fool us for continually falling into this trap. I feel the same about Aguerd and Todibo, neither of which look to have the right tools to thrive here like they did in France/ Spain where they are heralded as Beckenbauer like figures.

The transfer window has been a total farce for the Hammers . We still do not have a proper striker or dominant centre half . The last minute midfield reinforcements may help but only time will tell . Most of the window messing around with keepers and we end up with an expensive Muppet sums it up . Sullivan is a Joke . Free transfers and loans is all we can expect . He is a leach bleeding our club dry of funds and respect . A laughing stock . Head and shoulders the worse run club in the Premiereship .

Hi guys, are we to assume that Rodriguez and Irving are still with us? If so I hope that Rodriguez is tempted by a Saudi move as otherwise he will be another obstacle for Potts to get past. On the whole, don’t get all the doom and gloom surrounding the window, think we have done well considering the stance of the owners.

That’s amusing “Italian Giants” but they continually plead poverty to the extent that they don’t buy the player and we subsidise 75% of his wages! Another example of West Ham’s strange dealings in the transfer market.

Thanks for posting this – I hope that it works out for Cornet

On a related note do we know whether the Aguerd transfer to Marseille went through – I have not seen any confirmation

Yep, confirmed on the official site. I wonder how long this yo-yoing loan will go on for? I guess the only way for things to change is if Cornet lowers his wage demands to allow for a permanent transfer.

he’s two more years of £60k a week WHU contract so there’s your answer.

I guess 25% of his wages covered by Genoa is better than nothing. This is how low the bar is these days…
