Last week the London Stadium powered up its £4.5m cutting-edge solar panel installation, providing renewable energy for the first time
The system will generate an estimated 850,000 kWh annually, offsetting over 200 tonnes of carbon emissions—equivalent to 100 transatlantic flights from London to New York the stadium owners claim.
It is anticipated that the installation will save around 10% per annum in the cost of electricity for the West Ham home ground. The exact annual savings will depend on the prevailing electricity charges.
The estimated utilities cost for the current financial year is £3.7m. although the Stadium owners are currently out for tender for a new electricity provider.
Using a guide of savings around £300,000 per annum the pay back will be just over 16.5 years with around £576,000 additional funds required to maintain them over that same period with a total cost of just under £5m.
