West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui expressed mixed feelings about his team’s performance in their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City. While he was pleased with the overall effort, he was frustrated by the team’s inability to convert chances.
Lopetegui praised West Ham’s strong start to the match, but he criticised the team for failing to capitalise on scoring opportunities. He emphasised that against top-tier teams like Manchester City, every chance must be converted.
Lopetegui attributed one of Manchester City’s goals to a “gift” from West Ham. The error allowed City to take the lead, and the Hammers struggled to recover.
Just after halftime, Lopetegui made tactical adjustments to improve West Ham’s performance. The changes seemed to have a positive impact, as the Hammers created far more chances in the second half.
Despite creating chances, West Ham failed to convert them into goals. Lopetegui expressed his frustration with the team’s finishing, highlighting the need to improve in this area.
“I think we did really well,” he insisted. “We had more passes, long periods of possession and created chances. But again – if you don’t take advantage of these opportunities, they are not going to forgive you.”
He picks the team, the buck stops there.
It’s the players that missed the chances and it happens a lot
I think we’ll regret not getting Duran, and he’ll have a great season for Villa and price us out
