With Julen Lopetegui’s arrival at West Ham imminent, transfer rumours are swirling about the Spaniard’s plans for the squad. West Ham needs a significant rebuild, with a focus on young talent, Premier League experience, and lowering the squad’s average age.

According to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Lille midfielder Angel Gomes is a top target for West Ham. Gomes, a former Manchester United youth player, ticks several boxes for Lopetegui and director of football Tim Steidten.

Young and Hungry: At 23 years old, Gomes fits the profile of a young, talented player West Ham seeks.
Homegrown Status: Having come through Manchester United’s academy, Gomes fulfills Premier League homegrown player requirements.
Versatility: Gomes can play in various midfield and attacking positions, offering tactical flexibility.
Impressive Form: Gomes has been a consistent performer for Lille, contributing with assists and a high average match rating.

While Gomes would likely see more playing time at West Ham compared to Tottenham or Aston Villa, who are also reportedly interested, West Ham will need to negotiate a transfer fee with Lille. Gomes’ contract enters its final year, potentially leading to a more affordable acquisition.

Gomes’ potential signing adds to the rumours of West Ham targeting young talents like Marcus Edwards. This strategy, combined with potential moves for experienced players like Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, suggests a promising rebuild under Lopetegui.

West Ham fans, initially divided about Lopetegui’s appointment, are becoming more optimistic as transfer rumours emerge. The focus on young, talented players aligns with their desires for the club’s future.

Is it too late to change tactics now that Roberto di Zerbi has become available after today?

    • B says:

I’ve seen rumours of de Zerbi returning to Italy to manage, plus Bayern Munich and Man Utd.
So a move to West Ham seems unlikely, even if they hadn’t already agreed to sign Loopy.

  • Jeeps says:

Seems like real deal but worth quoted at £41m with transfer fee £82m.
Due to amount of players that need to be brought in think he’s unlikely.
Wilfried Zaha moved last time for champion league unlikely west ham can compete with that.

I wouldn’t get to excited about that first you have to convince whoever that the move would be beneficial to there career then comes the transfer fee as we all know Sullivan does not like to spend money when all the deals are signed and sealed then i will believe it we have been promised all sorts by Sullivan and co and we are still waiting for them to happen

I hear you fellow hammer, but maybe I’m being naive but with us getting Julian that may give more lolly for better young players in the already depleted squad.

    • Ess_Bee says:

Err… didn’t the Hammers shell out £450M on transfers?!

Maybe over the entire existence, but have been a minimal spender when you include sales.
Somewhere about mid-table premiership, which seems to be reflected on the field results.
