Manager rules out Fabianski conversation

Poland boss Czesław Michniewicz has ruled out asking Lukasz Fabianski to return to the national team.

The Hammers goalkeeper won 57 caps for Poland during his career, going to multiple major tournaments; he was on the bench throughout the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008, while he was their first-choice at Euro 2016 and also travelled to the World Cup in 2018 and to Euro 2020.

Wojciech Szczęsny, the former Arsenal stopper who is now on the books at Juventus, is currently Poland’s No.1 but there is little depth beyond him.

As a result, Michniewicz was asked about the prospect of pulling Fabianski back into the fold, in case the ex-Gunners ace sustains an injury before the tournament.

However, he has ruled out such a prospect.

Speaking to Sportowy24, he said: “We do not think about such an option, Fabian has already finished his international career and is unlikely to change his mind. I talked to Łukasz Piszczek a year ago, I wanted to bring him to Legia, but he firmly refused, and Fabian is the same type as Piszczu,” Michniewicz said.

“Once he has something planned, it works as planned. This is not a crazy man who changes his mind overnight, but a serious guy. He has already said goodbye with the farewell, so the matter is clear.

“Although, of course, I regret that it happened so quickly that, as a coach, I did not live to see Fabiański compete with Szczęsny for a place in the goal of the Polish national team.”

Fabianski remains the Hammers’ first-choice ahead of summer signing Alphonse Areola and one has to think that his international retirement has played a key role in him still going strong at 37.
