Martinez helps humiliates Newcastle

ToniNewcastle United were humiliated by Oxford United in the FA Cup this afternoon as they beat the Magpies 3-0 in the fourth of round of the FA Cup. West Ham loanee Toni Martinez helped the demolition by heading in the third and final goal in the 87th minute.

Martinez came on as 70th minute substitute but wasted no time scoring against Newcastle who remain second in the Championship table. League One Oxford remain in fourteenth spot in their league table one division below the Magpies.

Oxford signed the former Spain under-17 international Martinez on  a season long loan from West Ham earlier this month. The Hammers  paid £2.4m last April for the 19-year-old striker after he scored more than 100 goals for Valencia’s youth teams.

At the time of the loan Martinez said “I’m very happy to sign for Oxford.

“My objective is to play as many games as possible and score goals to help the team.

“It’s a challenge to go and play in League One, learn English football and score as many goals as possible.”

  1. Why are we sniffing around players like Defoe, when we have the ready made alternative. Surely he deserves a place on the bench from time to time if not every week. He scores for fun but it seems Bilic is as unwilling to give youth a chance as Hippohead was. Now I do trust Bilic, but unless we use players like Oxford and Martinez from time to time, the next time we will see them, is when they are being unveiled by Man U or Arsenal.

  2. I remember many of the posts and articles on C&H after the Arsenal away game which we won 0-2 with Oxford in the team. Posts were saying that Bilic had balls to play a youngster, Fatty wouldn’t have played Oxford, we do have an academy despite Fatty not playing any of them, we’ll see a lot more of the youngsters in this brand new era, Fatty’s idea of experience is to send our promising youngsters out on loan etc etc. What a load of rubbish. Bilic has been proven to be as bad as Fatty for not giving the youngsters a game. Everton just throw their promising youngsters into the team. Martinez should have been given a go before considering a £15m championship striker and the 34 year old Defoe. We trod in the brown stuff when we somehow convinced Oxford to sign a contract.

    Yep that makes sense?

  4. If Hogan is worth £15 mil and injury prone
What’s Martinez worth at the moment ?
Newcastle are still rated Premier quality by some and Martinez scores,
Zaza could not score how many at times games ?
We need to use our remaining games to give Fletcher a chance now Martinez and Browne are on Loan
Put Fletcher on the bench every game or start or let him go
I know Bilic needs results but we need to build for the future
The owners are saying we need home grown talent
    Here they are

  5. I aint so easily won over by a youngster scoring in the lower leagues or PL2 & all of a sudden it means they should be in the first team.Saw it all before with Elliot Lee,calls for him to lead our line because he was scoring goals for fun in the U23s.
I go to watch the U23s sometimes & yeah there are some good players but the difference in standard is immense from that to the PL.Oxford,Browne,Pike,Martinez,Rice, all good promising youngsters. Are they ready for PL football,i aint so sure.
The manager & coaches train, work with these kids everyday, they know where there at in their development.
If you look through the PL there are very few teams play youngsters when a seasoned pro is available for that position.Everton,Southampton play youngsters but in many cases it has been through necessity, especially at Everton where they have been injury hit with a paper thin squad 😉
Anyway lets not forget that Lanzini,Byram are both only 23,Fernandes is 20 so its bullsh*t about not playing younger players anyway.Fletcher has featured,Quina,Browne,Oxford have all been on the bench.
Look at all the youngsters that have ben called for previously,Elliot Lee,Dan Potts,George Moncur,Diego Poyet plus others.Where the bloody hell are all these ‘its their time for the PL’ players now? 😁
