McAvennie: Mooro v Rice

Such has been the phenomenal rise of Declan Rice that it has been mentioned in personal conversations that he could soon pass Bobby Moore in terms of playing ability with one guy telling me there is more in his game than Mooro’s. We put the suggestion on Frank McAvennie in a recent interview. Here’s his response.

I love Declan Rice and he’s adding to his game all the time.

His burst from the back to get himself on the score sheet are something I felt he was capable of some time back and it’s great to see him start and complete those runs successfully.

He’s regularly been compared to Mooro which is hardly surprising given his abilities but can we truly make such a comparison.

I think not!

Great player yes but Mooro was supreme – the man who made West Ham sexy – the man who with two other Hammers lifted trophies for the club and the World Cup.

There will never be another Mooro – he will forever be the icon of icons at West Ham.
