Mikey’s number one striker status may be a problem

West Ham need to make up their minds whether Michail Antonio is to remain the No 1 striker or be used as a super sub.

The club may currently be in transfer window trouble in signing finding a top front man because none of quality are prepared to warm the bench with Mikey as the regular starter.

David Moyes has developed the No 9 into the striker he is today and may or may feel reluctant about taking the second super sub option.

And let’s be honest when injury free and on his game Mikey is as good as any striker in the Premier League and therein lies our problem

The reality is that it was deeply disappointing we saw Danny Ings go to to the other team in claret and blue yesterday after scoring 25 goals for  Southampton last season. At £25 million was frankly a snip.

And before anybody complains we wouldn’t spend the dough on the 29 year old, which is available, ask one question: “Would he have come to us as a back up striker or gone to Villa as number One”

Blaming our favourite targets whoever that may be is an irrelevancy and helps nothing.

That Ings  wouldn’t have been guaranteed a first team place with such a brilliant record was clearly a massive factor despite the fact that injury issues seem a given with Mikey.

  1. I dont think that was a factor ings behalf, he wanted to go to city or united and villa already have watkins and wesley to compete with.

But I get your point. We dont have the resources to pay £30m plus for abraham to be a rotation player. The beauty of ings was that he can play as a 9 or 10 which would have give us options. I think we’ll end up going for adam armstrong now. Been floating about for over a season.

  2. I would of liked to see Ings or Abraham behind mikey playing two up top with benny coming in from the left and Bowen on the right. In all honesty we can do with a top striker and two lesser but affective strikers. We have got a long season a head.
    3xst/cf
    2xcm as well as Coventry
    2xcb
And we could have a good team obviously 2or 3 would have to be loans as the board ain’t that generous.

  3. What nonsense

We don’t have £25m to spend on Ings or anyone else, but keep peddling Sullivan’s spin if it makes you feel important

Do you honestly think a younger, fitter, established starter in Watkins is just going to be dropped for Ings?

It’s called competition for places and rotation – exactly the same as thirty one year old Antonio with spaghetti hamstrings would have had to deal with, and if he couldn’t handle that then he’s better off being moved on

Who knows, maybe Villa will even both play together in a partnership?

Players won’t come because Antonio is number one – give me a break…

  4. I’m beginning to panic a little now. Brighton and Southampton both have money to spend on a cente forward. If we are holding out for the cheapest deal- that’s simply not going to happen now- deals for Armstrong and or Edouard are going to prove more expensive now then at the start of the window such is the demand. I just can’t believe that being in need of a striker since January, Moyes hasn’t earmarked the player he wants?! This whole situation is just baffling!

  5. So Ings wouldn’t come to West Ham because he couldn’t compete with 10 goal Michail Antonio so went to compete with 16 goal Ollie Watkins at Villa….
    Hmmm!

  6. What top striker would be afraid to come to West Ham, KNOWING full well Mikey’s injury record and history?
In fact, if you want to be the number one striker at West Ham and were good enough, then just because he has the No 9 shirt is irrelevent and wouldn’t be seen as an issue by most top strikers looking to come to West Ham.

  7. Haha, sorry, but I don’t think Mikey is as good as any other striker, he will probably only be available for half our games. He should be an impact sub if anything.

Are we the only team with one midfielder turned striker? I would guess all other 19 clubs have at least 3 strikers

  8. I think Mikey is a good striker not up there with the best in prem league tho. As for Ings he is not guaranteed number 1 spot at Villa either imo. Watkins scored more Prem goals, than both last season. If we are only looking for an average back up to Antonio, we may aswell forget next season. We need someone to fight for the right to start. Yes Mikey looks okay in pre season kick abouts, but will never get you 20 goals.

  9. As said earlier – what complete nonsense – he will go to Villa and compete with England striker Ollie Watkins a 25 year old with 37 appearances and 14 Prem goals – but wouldn’t want the competition with Antinio 🤦🏼‍♂️
The idea we have a converted winger as our sole striker & he’s so good no one will sign is the most ridiculous piece of propaganda yet – we can’t afford to buy a striker – that’s it ! None of the hierarchy will say it – but we all know it – doing GSB propaganda that is this ludicrous- while running hatchet pieces on any takeover shows the honesty levels of this “journalism”

  10. I think that the question (to which we don’t know the answer) is whether Moyes wanted Ings – I’m sure that Ings and Mikey could play together

Villa have now spent 100 million three years running – OK so this year they are going to get it all back on Grealish – but in terms of attacking players they now have Ings, Watkins, Bailey, Mbendia (?) (the guy from Norwich), Traore and others. They can’t all play all of the time

I would love us to get a striker – but will not get my knickers in a twist about Villa

  11. Playing 2 upfront who can’t get back is preposterous. They could only defend at set pieces. We defo need at least 1 Forward this window but can’t see us playing 2 at the same time. When Haller played Mikey was on wing duty. How often did Haller get back? Mikey can’t keep running all over the pitch.

  12. Not really a snip, he only had 12 months left on his contract

  13. Ings said he would only go to a top six club. Did he seriously believe that he would play every game for one of them? He then goes to Villa.. top six?? Lol not even in Europe this season. He sure as night follows day didn’t sign for us because of Mikey, saying that is ludicrous & embarrassing.
The difference is Villa are showing ambition & are more appealing than us, players must be watching us & seeing we are at best standing still or going backwards.

What is the point of saying we really want to sign Abraham (who doesn’t want to sign for us anyway) & in the next breath admit we can’t afford him.
Lingard.. cost too much & doesn’t want to come
Zouma… cost too much & doesn’t want to come
Ings……..allegedly cost too much & is too old, even though he is 2 yrs younger that Antonio
    90% of other players linked….??

Same old same old, always offer below what clubs want but practically give our players away.
Remind me again, which team in East London has got a billionaire owner.

  14. antonio is not harry kane.
We have no actual specialist strikers at all. ANYONE coming in has a better chance of nailing down a starting place than at any other PL club righ tnow, oh and there are at least 6 EL games to play as well.

i dont believe strikers wont join us because of one winger/rightback converted striker with a dodgey hamstring is playing there for now. If they do think that, they dont think much of their own ability at this level.

  15. Antonio will never play a whole season so don’t see why that would put off anyone from joining us. They’ll be straight in one Antonio’s hamstrings go which is a given!

  16. Enter Troy Deeney!
