Former West Ham player and manager Harry Redknapp says he is not excited by the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini and says they should have appointed someone English like Eddie Howe or Sean Dyche.
“You can’t tell me there’s not some good young managers about in the Championship who’ve done great jobs, who do deserve an opportunity to manage,” Redknapp, who managed West Ham between 1994 and 2001, told the BBC.
“They even had Stuart Pearce at West Ham, who was there with David Moyes, Pearcey could have done the job no problems. No disrespect to Pellegrini but winning a Premier League with that squad he had at Manchester City, there’s every chance you’ve got of winning the Premier League.
“One thing is for sure, if he keeps the squad he’s got he’ll do very well to make the top eight.
“I don’t see it as an exciting appointment, I’ve got to be honest… West Ham’s a fantastic club, but see if they can poach Eddie Howe or Sean Dyche. There’s some great young managers in the country who, if given the opportunity, could do the job, but they don’t get the opportunities.”
Give it a rest Harry , Pearce, Howe, Dyche, we don’t want
another season of fighting relegation.
We now have a top manager and it’s exciting times for all
West Ham supporters.
I very much hope that Pellegrini will transform West Ham, & I have no reason to question his ability – but Harry has a point. We will just have to wait & see how he gets on. So far, & until the new season gets under way, there is no evidence to suggest that Pellegrini will be a “miracle cure”. Let’s hope that he is !
H does not have a point. Why should anyone pay any attention to what he has to say? Ask a Portsmouth/Southampton/West Ham fan* (delete as appropriate) what state he’ll left their club in once he’d finished rinsing it, ask his best man, his ‘best mate’ Billy Bonds about the character of the man. Sold Rio and set this club back decades because of his avarice. No evidence of similar behaviour from Mr P yet. I’m happy to take a punt on him rather than fall for ‘the last refuge of the scoundrel ‘ and go English for the sake of it. But thanks for the advise H… not.
Pellegrini is a step above all of the alternative young managers mentioned, because he has a better footballing brain..
Harry-silly old duffer!
Dyche has done a fantastic job with very limited resources at Burnley, but the club is smaller and the fans (probably) have lower expectations.I think most of us would not enjoy the brand of football Dyche would bring and I don’t think he or Howe would be able to stand up to our owners. We came close to relegation three times under Harry and the intervening years have done him no favours.
Not usually siding with Redknapp ( rather with Bonds ), he like most English managers is rightly despairing over English managers being forced out by any foreign name that comes along.
My choice has been for some time Eddie Howe who plays great football, and has now done it in the Prem for a few years at a tiny provincial club. He has worked miracles
It is up to Pellegrini to prove he can do it with us in the Prem for the next 3 years, depending on his budget. He still has to do the nitty gritty of buying and selling to create a squad that he can manage. There are an enormous number of things he must get right very soon to succeed, in his biggest challenge so far.
With everybodys support I hope he succeeds, but the jury is definitely just entering the room for the first time.
Everyone has an opinion. He’s entitled to it, just as we’re entitled to discard it! 🙂
Dear old harry bless him,his had his time maybe right about Eddie Howe would have liked to have seen him at West Ham but he would need a few years to build a team,as for the manager we have got now he will build a team and his experience in the game will give him the respect of the board will all hope to back him and give the guy the funds to rebuild, with the board sitting back enjoying the football and cheering with us fans and being quiet at all other times
Wonder what the Bournemouth fans his other beloved club think about him touting Eddie Howe, Howe is very good at Bournemouth but when he went to Burnley couldn’t make it work, for me he is a very good coach but defensively inept much like, Rodgers, Wenger & Martinez who have a similar style of play, i.e. plan A and if plan a fails plan A. The same has been mentioned actually about Pellegrini I guess we will find out but I am a lot more confident that Pellegrini has the experience to get us out of any holes we may encounter than Howe would, am excited by the appointment but a lot will depend on how well he is backed in the windows, certainly the team we have at the moment there are only a few players that would be typical of his style.
I don’t think we should be poaching from clubs who gave their guys a chance e.g. Howe, Dyche or Benitez. Far happier to bring in Pellegrini from China; a guy who’s got an amazing track record. Feeling very positive.
