MOTD pundits drop staggering verdict

|

Match of the Day pundits Gary Lineker, Dion Dublin, and Danny Murphy all agreed with the referee’s decision to award Arsenal a penalty against West Ham.

Vlad Coufal slid to challenge Alexandre Lacazette in the area and replays showed that he won the ball before catching Lacazette with his follow through.

Still, the referee pointed to the penalty spot and gave Vlad Coufal a second yellow card, with him having been booked earlier in the half.

It appeared a strange decision at the time, especially as VAR did not overturn the decision.

It meant that Coufal would have been suspended for the clash with Norwich this weekend prior to its suspension due to COVID.

Match of the Day, naturally, analysed the decision after watching the highlights and they all, to a man, agreed with the referee’s call.

Speaking on the BBC programme, as transcribed by West Ham Zone, Dublin said: “I actually think he’s there well before Lacazette, and that should be a simple challenge, he should take the ball.”

Murphy replied: “I don’t think Lacazette helps him, does he?

“He catches him, but he’s up 20 seconds later, ready to take the penalty.”

Lineker then asked: “Why should Lacazette help him, I suppose?”

Murphy replied: “It’s a foul, it is a penalty, but you don’t have to roll over 17 times because that puts it in the ref’s head as well.”
