Recently departed Hammers coach Johnny Heitinga, has disclosed ongoing discussions with Liverpool regarding a potential addition to Arne Slot’s coaching team. The Dutchman played under David Moyes for Liverpool’s city rivals Everton from 2009 to 2014, parted ways with West Ham following Moyesies exit earlier this summer.

Slot, who recently replaced Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s coach, revealed during his inaugural press conference his intention to expand his coaching staff after several departures post-Klopp era.

Heitinga’s move to West Ham occurred in September 2023 after leaving Ajax, where he notably couldn’t secure a Champions League spot for the first time since 2009 during his brief managerial period with the Amsterdam-based team.

However, criticism of Heitinga was unnecessarily harsh given his role at Ajax was very much a rescue mission as a caretaker manager with the damage already done earlier that season.

The 40-year-old concluded his stint in East London this summer and confirmed through his agent the discussions with Liverpool about a potential engagement. I suspect Heitinga is a talented coach who’s reputation has hopefully not been harmed by last seasons struggles.

I think you’re right, in retrospect, about him becoming a tainted coach.
When he first arrived I thought he was a breath of fresh air but after a good start, things went downhill, as we all saw.
I now wonder if Moyes wouldn’t let him do his job. Training sessions looked more professional at the beginning too and showed in our league position. He must’ve been stifled by the lower league dross of a ‘coaching’ staff he was working with and I was one who tainted him with the same brush…he certainly looked the fittest of the bunch and made Nolan’s beer belly look even more distended.
He knows Liverpool as a city well, so that will help. Let’s see.
