Moyes delighted with Declan

David Moyes has hailed the way Declan Rice has conducted himself as Hammers skipper as the results have continued to slide.

The Irons haven’t won in five and need a victory against Leeds in midweek to pull themselves clear of the drop zone.

Declan does not have much experience of captaining the club in such a difficult period, unlike Mark Noble, which Moyes has pointed out, but he is delighted with the way the England international has been working, both on and off the pitch.

Speaking ahead of the fixture against Jesse Marsch’s side, Moyes told reporters: “I haven’t listened to all the media stuff he has done, but I think Declan has conducted himself incredibly well. the way he handles himself, he is showing that maturity that comes from positions you get put in life.

“Obviously, he doesn’t want to be a captain of a team who are in the position they are in, he wants to be a captain of a team who is challenging for Europe, and we want him to be that as well. But then you have got to think there has been a Mark Noble loss on the pitch and around the dressing room, which in these situations, let’s be fair, Nobes unfortunately was in these situations more than he would probably have liked to have been.

“He is more adept to telling the players this is what we need to do and how we get out of it, but Declan has handled himself really well.”
