Moyes gives central defender clue

David Moyes seems set on bringing an experienced central defender to West ham based on his comments within a wide ranging London Evening Standard interview,

The manager has long proclaimed he wants a youthful and energetic team to start the new season but has now made it clear that an older and more experienced central defender may be on his way.

And although that again raises the spectre of his former Everton star John Stones perhaps arriving either permanently or on loan, Manchester United’s  Phil Jones (above) is another who is likely to be in his mind.

Commenting to the Standard he said: “We’re trying to bring in a younger group but we will also need a couple of experienced players. Central defenders are usually better when they’re more experienced.

Should he decide to move in the direction of either of the Manchester clubs it has to be a strong possibility that any deal would be on a loan basis with an option to buy.

Stones, 26,  comes out of contract in 2022 and Jones, 28, a year later so ‘heftyish’ transfer fees would probably be involved at this stage making a loan a lot more likely in either case .

  1. If we sign Phil Jones , I genuinely may throw up. Please no.

  2. Neither player is better than we have already . Stones is a total liability and Jones is another sick note . No thanks .

    • Jones suits our transfer policy perfectly – way past his best and permanently injured! You couldn’t make it up – but I hope someone has!

  3. It’s all speculation and , at no stage has Moyes mentioned names . I understand the reasoning & logic but it is nevertheless just speculation .

  4. Stones won’t happen, wages would be astronomical. Jones – I hope not. Wouldn’t mind a wholehearted player like Duffy though..

  5. It’s not going to to be either of these but I reckon Shane Duffy from Brighton???

  6. Stones was never given a chance to develop at ManC. Another one attracted by Silverware that they played almost no part in attaining. On loan, play, develop?

  7. NO NO NO. awful

But if its Shane Duffy, I would be happy, i think he’s decent.

  8. ‘Mobility’ Ruddock would be a better option than Phil Jones even today.
John Stones was always overrated, too. Might do OK but we need to avoid another Matthew Upson era!!
