Moyes: I know what Declan needs for him to stay

David Moyes admits that West Ham need to win trophies if Declan Rice is going to stay for the foreseeable future.

The England international has continually been linked with a move away from the club and that has been the case again this week, with both Manchester United and Chelsea linked with a swoop.

We have reported that there haven’t been any bids tabled for Rice yet, nor has there been a single enquiry.

However, Moyes has been interviewed by The Athletic, and he admits that, in terms of his long-term future, West Ham will need to start competing for the biggest trophies in the game.

The Hammers boss says that the Irons remain confident of keeping Declan, because of his contractual situation, but he accepts the club need to eventually win things in order to keep him happy.

The interview has been conducted by Premier League legend Alan Shearer and Moyes said: “Probably we do, yeah (need to win things).”

“We’ve got to keep driving it on. I have to keep driving and demanding that we keep moving on and being positive in our outlook of where we’re going to be. I need to keep adding good players, which is part of the club’s responsibility to keep with it.

“But the good thing is that we’ve got him for another three and a half years on his contract (until June 2024 with the option of an additional year), so we’re not under pressure from that. We would love him to stay, he’s so important to us, but like everything else we have to show that we can do it as well at West Ham.”
