Moyes: Irons had no choice but to spend

David Moyes admits that the Hammers have been forced to splash the cash this summer in a bid to compete with the top six.

The Hammers have spent over £160m this summer, bringing in the likes of Lucas Paqueta, Nayef Aguerd, and Gianluca Scamacca.

Moyes was asked how he felt about the disconnect between the cost of living crisis and the lavish sums being spent in the top-flight.

He took the time to have a dig at the media but feels now that clubs simply have to spend or risk being left behind.

He told reporters: “Let’s be fair, you boys are the ones who need us to sign players for you to write about and talk about. To come back and say is it us who are causing problems in society, you are encouraging signings.

“It is very difficult to answer the question but I hope money wouldn’t be the reason you get success in football, but it is driven by the media that money is the way forward and makes you successful. I really wish it wasn’t the case but it is going in that direction unfortunately.”

  1. I make Moyes right regarding the role that the media play in the hyperbole of player speculation, as the one thing they are NOT is passive observers.

I don’t believe that there was any way around the spending required during this transfer window as every man and his dog would have realised this. Hopefully, this is the platform we can build upon moving forward, with a few quality additions within future transfer windows.
