Moyes keeps scouting within the family

|

David Moyes has appointed his son David Moyes Jnr as a scout at West Ham according to the Daily Mail.

Moyes Jnr has left his role as a football agent with Wasserman to work in the scouting and recruitment department for West Ham.

Moyes, who signed a new three-year deal at West Ham earlier this month, has been looking to revamp the club’s recruitment department as he feels they are short of options and wants to bring a handful of scouts to the club — including his own son. More scouting appointments are expected in the near future.

Moyes brother Kenny is his agent and was instrumental in negotiating his new three year contract with David Sullivan.

Under Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos they employed their sons  Juan Pellegrini  and Mario Jnr as scouts.

Managers employing sons as scouts is more common than you might think in football.

While there may be calls of nepotism ultimately if the person can do the job and is trusted it shouldn’t matter.

It doesn’t seem like many people have been listening to Moyes’s REPEATED statements about the infrastructure of this club. Jr isn’t bad for starters but anyone who simplistically believes that Jr is going to be the “entire” scouting system, probably needs a bit more grey matter.

I understand that as a general term Nepotism, can be used in many circumstances, but each situation would have to be judged on its own merit and based upon the character of the main personality involved.
In this case, you could put money on it that David Moyes Jr will be giving his dad a FULL account of the players that he is scouting….and who could do this better than his son?
I have NO issues regarding Jr scouting for his dad….none at all.

The only issue I see with this is if you lose the manager at some point you end up losing part of your scouting network too.

The scouting network should work under the guidance/direction of the manager, but not so intrinsically linked that if the manager changes you need to start again on the scouting front.

Scouting these days is a specialised task. What Pellegrini wanted is unlikely to be what Moyes wants. Should have worked at Man Utd for Moyes taking over from Alex Ferguson. That should have been a straight replacement. Instead David Moyes brought in his own people to make his mark. Not what was required there. But everywhere else, with no succession involved (like Liverpool Bootroom of 70’s & 80’s), most infrastructure has to change to reflect the thoughts and methods of the new man.
