Moyes lauds near forgotten Iron

David Moyes put it on the record that he prefers to work with a smaller squad than maybe usual in the Premier League these days.

And it became clear – LATER – why for example he had used near forgotten man Ryan Fredericks on Wednesday night at a time when some of us thought he may be on his way out of the club.

Moyes knows how to get the best of each of his players when they are required and the former Fulham defender was very much a case in point as he and Vladimir Coufal did a great job in marking Jack Grealish.

And the manager hasn’t been slow to give the right back a word of praise telling reporters: “I was really pleased .

His speed is really important to us, he gives us an extra dimension and allowed us to go on the outside and put crosses in from the outside rather than Jarrod coming inside a bit more.

It gave me a little bit more of a defensive situation when I needed it, up against a good team.

At the start of the season, I remember when folks were saying to me ‘are you going to go with four or five at the back?’

And I said this is a season where we are going to have to be flexible, I started with four and we went to five to get some results over a period and now we are back at four maybe due to injury, maybe due to us needing a change.

You should not be surprised if we are looking to do things, or try things and we should be encouraged to see what could possibly work.

I thought Ryan played very well the other night, I thought he did a great job for me with everything he did and he has given me more thoughts and options that he can do that job much more often now.”

  1. I doubt that ANY of us supporters would’ve dropped Bowen for Fredericks….or even suggested it.
I’m well pleased for Fredericks as I was for Masuaku, which proves Moyes’s point about preferring a smaller squad. It’s easy to be wasteful in discarding players instead of utilising them correctly. Fredericks’s confidence must be sky high now and well deserved after a great performance.
We have gone from having a lack of players and choices to a team full of choices with competitive, hungry players, putting in the performances when given the opportunity.
I’m rapidly running out of words to describe our manager Moysie.

  2. I think Bowen needs the competition. He looked lost against LVP.
Fredericks speed is impressive. He makes a mistake, he chases it. Great attitude.
