David Moyes has lavished praise on striker Gianluca Scamacca after he sealed West Ham’s 1-0 win over Anderlecht on Thursday.

The Italy international came off the bench to score the only goal of the game, as the Irons sealed their third win from three in the Europa Conference League.

Scamacca has now hit a rich vein of form after struggling initially after his £30.5m arrival from Sassuolo.

The 23-year-old has now scored four goals for the Hammers, and he was also on the scoresheet against Wolves at the weekend in the 2-0 win.

And Moyes has now revealed just how proud he was of the star’s performance, as he continues to provide support to Mikey Antonio.

He came on for the Jamaica international in the second half after Antonio struggled as the tip of the spear, ploughing a lone furrow against Anderlecht throughout the game.

He told reporters after the game, as per the Evening Standard: “When he came on he helped us.

“The players who started did a good job apart from the final third so Gianluca got that opportunity and hit the target with it and got it in the corner. It was really important.

“I want strikers who are competitive against each other and that will score. At the moment, Gianluca is the one who is getting the moments and getting the goals.

“He is getting one or two opportunities in a game and he is taking them. We really need it as our goal numbers are not as good as they should be. We have scored three in the other games and tonight we should have scored three as well but we didn’t. Gianluca came on and got that important goal.”
