Moyes praise for Hammers fightback

By Hughie Southon

David Moyes could find few faults with the performance against Fulham beyond a slow start and going behind early on.

But even that was turned into a virtue as the team showed their ability to fight back from adversity to get a result that in the end they clearly deserved.

The team is clearly getting closer to the form which took them into Europe and is seeing them hopefully ready to top their group in the Conference this season.

Moyes delivered his verdict on the game admitting that, whilst that start and early goal were bad news, it has given the boys an opportunity to show they were capable of coming from behind.

Speaking after the game to www.whufc,com he said: “This season, we hadn’t come from behind [in the Premier League] yet, so it was important for me and a big part of what we need to do.

There will be games in which you go behind and you have to find a way out of it. Thankfully we did.

He added that it is always important to get a goal back to ensure the pressure is not felt in the dressing room at half time and added: “In the first half, Gianluca had a couple of chances from headers and the goalkeeper made some saves.

“So, I didn’t think we played that badly after the first 15-20 minutes, in which we were slow and didn’t really get out of the box.

For a young Italian boy to come over and be good in the Premier League is not easy. He’s beginning to show he can score different goals as well.

He had the chance which he got down and put it past the post, he had the header which the keeper made a good save from, so on the day he’s had two or three chances to score, and the one he took showed the difference from him.

The deft touch he got to get it over the goalkeeper and under the bar was a really nice finish.

  1. We did well after the initial lethargy which defined our issue – slow transition and no outlet ball – Fulham used the flanks so effectively early on and caused us problems. That works if applied quickly, it becomes a cul-de-sac if applied slowly which we did. Ironically, I like Antonio as a wide outlet player. Cornet is a good signing for that too. Exploit the wings in transition, don’t lump it towards the centre forward with a defender up his backside please!
