Moyes reflects on Chelsea defeat

|

David Moyes post-match virtual press conference following West Ham’s 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Your assessment on the game?

We have done a lot of good things but not enough good things in either box where it mattered.

Is it up front where you feel you didn’t make the most of your opportunities?

Well, it was one of the reasons but as I just said it was in the other box as well which we have to defend, whether it be a corner. We were playing well but we gave them a second goal which makes the job doubly difficult but we did a lot of good things, I thought this was a really big test for us tonight coming to Chelsea.

We knew how hard this would be and I thought for long periods of the game, we did well enough but we didn’t do so well in our own box to defend and in their box to score a goal.

Anything you were particularly upset about with the officials at the end?

I just thought it was at a poor level tonight, a lot of things didn’t go in our favour tonight.

Would that include Jarrod Bowen’s goal that was ruled out?

It doesn’t really matter. I just thought it wasn’t at a good level.

Still won four of the last seven, top half at Christmas, you must be happy with how things stand? Or are you?

No, I am not happy when we lose. I want to win, I don’t expect to lose, I expect to come and win and if not, try and get a draw.

I expected to win though and we lost tonight but as I said, this was a big test for us tonight as a team and I think the players did a good job, they stood up to the test for long periods and we made it a good game.

I take it you didn’t think it was a foul by Bowen on Silva?

I don’t know. I just thought the level wasn’t good. Things certainly didn’t go in our favour.

It didn’t go your way tonight but how far can you go?

I think tonight to come and challenge Chelsea, I saw this as one of our biggest tasks, I think we played against a lot of the teams competing to win the league this year and we have given them good games.

We are showing we can compete. Yes tonight we lost by three but there were long periods where we gave it a good go. We were just lacking a little bit at both ends of the pitch at the moment which will make the difference.

With that in mind, you have Michail Antonio injured, but no striker on the bench, is that something to address in January?

Well, I hope we get Micky back, soon. If we don’t then we need to think about what else we are going to do, how we are going to do it because I think we just need alternatives or options, we are a bit limited with that.

If not, we need to start looking within my own group to see if I can find another Marko Arnautovic or Micky Antonio, I think that’s what I am going to try and do.

Moyes has got a lot of credit recently, deservedly.
However he has to take his share of the blame for this defeat .
To say he expected to win with Noble starting and with a flat back 4 is either delusional or taking the fans for fools .

  • Hammerpete says:

Play 5 at the back. Nobes can’t do no 10 but his heart wants to. Wrong to play him there. Fornals is all over the place and hopeless in front of goal. Haller – time up mate.

We had a system that worked well.
    One guy gets injured.
Moyes changes the whole system for one guy.
    That’s stupid.

Play Johnson at lab to do a job. Don’t compromise all the other 9 outfield positions for 1 injury.

And mostly certainly don’t play noble in a 10 role. He can’t do it. Doesn’t retain the ball, doesn’t look to move us up to pitch 10 yards when we gets it, doesn’t have the legs to get near anyone, it’s.just utterly wrong for him to be there.

A good correct assessment, the officials should be accountable for 20 years we have been the biggest victims of bad officiating almost every season. Our defending as a 4 is not good enough and the weakest link us Cresswell, they had all their success down the left side which as been a problem for years, Cresswell does play the 3 5 2 system very well, the 442 very poorly as we all know. I thought that Noble should have been subbed for Diop and play Cresswell as the wing back in 352. The difference at both ends, yes they had players willing to run in behind and cut us open, we need forwards to do that, Bowen is capable as are Fornals and Benrahma, Haller is not, slow ponderous and easy to catch offside which happens repeatedly. Bring back Arnautovic if he is available.

Arnautovic,no way would i want him back after what he done to us.
Let him eat noodles in china for all i care.

I think the score line flattered Chelsea. Apart from the first twenty minutes we controlled the game. I t really showed that we desperately need another striker or two, especially as Antonio has dodgy ham strings. Also couldn’t see anything wrong with Bowen’s goal, but that’s West Ham for you and since when does a forward bundle the goalkeeper into the back of the net and not get a free kick for it, but that’s West Ham for you.
