Moyes ruthless decision

It will be interesting to see if David Moyes plays Angelo Ogbonna against Olympiacos this evening. I was intrigued to see the Italian put forward as the face of West Ham as part of the press duties in the build-up to the Europa League game.

Ogbonna looked like Father Time had caught up with him during the first fixture against the Greek side. The own goal he scored against Olympiacos was all about a lack of athleticism. He was in the correct position tactically, but he could not react quickly enough to prevent an entirely avoidable goal.

Ogbonna-West Ham

Moyes ruthless decision: An own goal from Ogbonna in the previous fixture against Olympiacos.

The former Italian international is not the only Hammers defender to make a mistake this season of course. However, he does struggle to deal with fast players, and Olympiacos have a few. For that reason, I’d be surprised if David Moyes selects Ogbonna for what is an important game for the club and manager.

Moyes can’t afford an embarrassing night at the London Stadium. He needs to win this fixture and follow it up with victory against Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Failure to do so could result in the pressure on him becoming unbearable.
