Moyes’ summer signings rated

Areola: Looked very good in Europe and one wonder save in particular comes to mind. Looks a more than adequate No 2 to Fab but still awaiting his permanent PL chance 7

Kerher: Moyes has stuck by him as right back recently and earlier at central defence. Looks ok on the ball but there have been a number of errors which have led to goals. 4

Emerson: Very much no 2 to Cressie with few chances to show his PL credentials 5

Downes: A surprise signing from Swansea but has really done well in Europe although looked to find the step up to PL something of a struggle 7

Aguerd: Too early to make a sensible judgement after his recent return from a pre-seasonĀ  injury

Paqueta: He still has to fulfil an enormous reputation but there has been the odd glimpse that he has plenty in the creative bank. We await with great interest 6

Cornet: Injury has delayed him after an impressive start which in particular saw him so badly done by in the Chelsea game. Promising on what we have seen 6

Scamacca: Still, on his own admission, not up to PL speed. Sometimes finds himself in trouble when defenders crowd him and has missed a number of chances 5

  1. Good article. The big issue I have is that Moyes bought players who do not suit the system he is playing for example emerson is not a lb who can play in a back 4, Kehrer is not a rb or CB whi can play on a back 4, Scamacca is not a striker who is suited to a one up too system. The manager has spent a huge amount of money on players that dont suit his preferred system of play and he is too stubborn to change the system to suit the players. Gor ne Kehrer and Emerson were poor signings, the rest I believe or hope they will be good signings but they wont be allowed to show it under this manager which is why he has to be sacked now.

  2. Moyes buys Players and plays them out of position. Having done this making the Player look a fool, he plays an old Player in preference to a younger one.

  3. Agree with Emerson more suited to a back 5, however Kehrer plays RB (and is appearantly good enough) for the German national team whilst Scamacca I believe played as a lone striker at Sassulo?

  4. Paquetta in Brazil World Cup Squad but not playing well at West Ham. Kehrer in Germany World Cup Squad but not playing well at West Ham. Scamacca in Italian National Squad but not playing well at West Ham. If only there was some common denominator I could work out!

  5. Absolutely agree with comments that he buys players then tries to shoe them in to his rigid system, and fails. Not just Kehrer, Emerson and Aguerd, who look essentially back five players, and Scamacca being starved of quality supply through midfield – too many DCM. He failed completely with Vlasic, has abused Johnson by using him all across the back four but continually dropping him. His system stifles play through midfield, making it tough for Paqueta to shine, always under pressure. We all can see he must change or go.

  6. Flynn Downes is not good enough for West Ham’s first team against Premier League opposition. He can play a tidy game with his short passes. but creates nothing and although he’s got a very good recovery engine, it’s needed because he gives the ball away too easily! Downes has a waspish tackle that is a liabilty when you look at the number of yellow cards he amassed last season at Swansea and previously for Ipswich in League One He also has a lousy temperament which was displayed by getting a straight red card for head-butting a Cambridge player in retaliation early in a match which was only a pre-season friendly!!! If you check the records, you’ll find that Aaron Cresswell scores more goals in a season than Downes does! An interesting stat if you want to compare the relative career paths of two players, is that Flynn Downes and Declan Rice were born in the SAME week. That will tell you how far Downes is behind Rice for those who think that he’s a direct replacement for our our captain if needed next summer. To call for Downes to replace the 27 year old Czech Republic skipper with 50-plus caps in our starting line-up is pathetically ignorant. He will not have amassed 100 games for West Ham by the time he moves on.

  7. Scammaca was brilliant in the European games. Scored some great goals. In the premier league has found it harder against some of the worlds best defenders. Same is probably true of a few of the new boys but I think they will improve as time goes on and they get used to the speed of the premier league.
