Moyes: Turning off at the end was “criminal”

|

Dejected West Ham boss David Moyes was naturally upset when he spoke to Sky Sports cameras post-match after thee 2-1 defeat against Arsenal tonight at the Emirates.

He opened by saying there was a lot of effort by his team and not to come away with anything was really hard to take.

The manager said that West Ham should have been awarded a penalty complaining that was definitely a handball even by the old rules adding we don’t really know the rules anymore anyway to the reporter.

He praised a very good performance by his West Ham players but said the Hammers switched off when they shouldn’t have and the players had many opportunities to score plus made good chances tonight and they disappointingly didn’t take them.

The disappointed gaffer said his players did an incredible job to get in the position there were in but to switch off in the last few minutes was criminal.

He declared:  “It’s a tough result, the played really well with a great deal of effort, so to not be rewarded with some points is really hard on us.

“We didn’t go on and win the game and switched off when we shouldn’t have. We had the opportunities to score and made good chances, but we couldn’t take them. To switch off like we did in the final minutes was criminal.

“We should have definitely had a penalty; it hits the boy’s arm and might even have been a penalty under the old rules! But who knows what the rules are?”

If Moyes was doing his job he would have dropped Fredericks and we would have at least got a point. Fredericks was the cause of that goal, just stood off the Arsenal player and let him play a simple ball in. Terrible defending but I blame Moyes for selecting him.

Yarmolenko stopped tracking back let the runner go also.
And, without Fredericks we wouldn’t have scored our goal.
The team switched off for 20 seconds and thats all it takes.
      To blame Moyes is ridiculous.

Well Arsenal targeted the weakness at right back and both goals came from it.Even picked up on by MOTD Pundits.Defence needs strengthening. How many times do we have to say it.?

What is “criminal” is that West Ham is a club with owners who don’t learn from their mistakes. Why have players for key positions not been signed a long time ago? Everybody else seems to manage.
If the owners can’t afford to run the club, they should sell it.

What is crime is not being able to remember when the last time was that West Ham actually paid a transfer fee for a right back, and who that was. We’ve had stopgap full backs, a couple of decent seasons from Cresswell aside, for years.

Fredericks is by some distance the weakest link in the team when he plays. At the very least, he gives Noble a run fir his money for the weakest link prize. He was at fault last night, and he was at fault for a goal last weekend. All he has in his locker is speed and the very occasional decent cross. His positional sense and marking are diabollically awful. We can get by without a CB, but we need at least two decent FBs. To waste so much time waiting forTarkowski is another crime.

Moyes is the problem, squad is good enough to finish top 10, abundance of forward players at their disposal that don’t get a look in, GSB if we haven’t got the funds to buy new at least get a proper manager in that knows how to get the best out of the current squad, Pochachino is calling that will take the heat off you until you inevitably sell up in 2023, fed up losing when we should be wining due to poor management.

Whilst the team deserved a point at the very least and whilst I have every faith in Moyes (he is the man to take us forward), I’m thinking that he’s been told by the moronic owners not to risk Haller and co and to only play them if needed. I have no proof of this but it seems the only real reason that we didn’t play with 2 up front and take the game to them from the very start. Masuaku is very good on the left and playing there does make sense but the defence we have right now will continue leaking goals week in week out. I just have that feeling that they don’t want to risk several players and try to sell them – all the while thinking we will manage the rest of the campaign with Antonio as a lone striker…I’m surmising and I shouldn’t but nothing else makes sense. I feel sorry for Moysey and unless he is backed soon I really wouldn’t blame him and Ricey for walking out. We have a team capable of beating any PL club – that’s all I do know…all the owners need to do is back DM with 2 strong defenders…I regret all those times I backed the owners in the past as there is so much BS going on behind the scenes – even looking at DM, one can see he looks shattered.

I watched last night and despite the sucker punch of conceding near the end I felt proud of the team – so find the negative comments about Moyes a bit puzzling – the game vs Newcastle was really poor – tonight we really gave it everything against a very good Arsenal side – I think that the criticism of Fredericks is harsh – he did very well for our goal. Some people are criticising Moyes for not making substitutions earlier – but if Bowen was still on instead of Yarmo then perhaps he would have tracked the run before the second goal – yet if Yarmo had scored (as vs Chelsea) it would have been an inspired substitution.
I see that Moyes is still the favourite on Sky Bet to be the first manager to leave – it doesn’t make sense to me after last night’s performance. What we now need is some stability – and tough as the game may be I feel that we could beat Wolves if we continue with the new formation. The challenge now for Moyes is to have the courage to leave Noble out of the starting XI – certainly no one in the team deserves to be dropped for him. Let him play vs Hull

Not puzzling at all. Everyone in football are aware that Arsenal score plenty of goals in
the last 10 minutes and that the Hammers concede plenty of goals in the last 10 minutes.
Knowing this it was Moyes responsibility to help the team out by substituting players at intervals preventing Arsenal getting into rhythm, instead he was prepared to sit back and let the inevitable happen.

  • Saul says:

I don’t understand everyone blaming Fredericks for Arsenal’s second last night. The blame lies solely at the door of Yarmolenko. Having just seen that goal again it’s him who doesn’t follow Ceballos as he runs in behind him and you can tell by his reaction when the goal goes in. Yarmolenko is a skilful player but in today’s game you HAVE to defend as well as attack and if Bowen is on the pitch Arsenal don’t score that goal, it really is that simple.

As for Moyes, he is so reactionary, so defensive. Fornals is NOT an effective left midfield player. Moyes should have seen Arsenal were there for the taking and after 60 minutes replaced him with Anderson, who plays further up the pitch. Arsenal’s danger came from their left, not right, so this wouldn’t have exposed us defensively. But Moyes couldn’t see what was needed until too late. How comes we can see these things but he can’t?

Arsenal were poor, they’re still not a great team and yet we still lost. No positives there as far as I’m concerned

    • Alan says:

Agree Saul about the second Arsenal goal. Was 100% down to Yarmolenko and not Fredericks.

I think Moyes got the line up and tactics spot on though.

      • johnham1 says:

Fredericks cannot defend and if you think he can after watching him for 2 years now and if you believe he should have been selected last night then I must admit I know absolutely nothing about football. He was 100% the root cause of that goal. Tes Yarmo should have tracked it but Fredericks made no attempt to stop the pass – in my lazy defending which is usually a sign of a poor defender, Johnson should have started. I accept the decision to play Cresswell in a back 3 was fine. I thought Bowen was poor the first day and again I thought he was poor last night. It was prob the right decision to give him another start but after last nights display I would surely be looking at a change there for the next game. This is the problem I have with Moyes he is too cautious and by being too cautious we are losing points. Another great example of this last night was when we went 2-1 down he needed to go two up and play a link player in behind. Instead he goes to a 4-4-2 which suited Arsenal instead of being more agressive with a 3-5-2. I know some of you think I am being harsh on Moyes but the team played well last night in a formation that suits us. But he needs to be more positive during the game. Johnson should have started, no justification in the world could he make for starting Fredericks. I see we are linked with Sidibe, if Moyes is thinking of signing this lad we are in big trouble. He was useless last year at Everton, he cannot defend either. I am sick of us buying rubbish at RB. We need a top RB, CB and one more forward player.

      • Saul says:

He did, Alan, but at 60/65 minutes when we were in our best spell, he should have seen how ineffective Fornals was in that time and put Anderson on to keep the foot on the gas. The fact that after that time we started to let Arsenal back in and he didn’t do anything is synonymous with his style of management in my opinion.

I agree that the starting line-up was spot on, it’s just frustrating how he doesn’t see the need for changes when everyone else seems to
