What was he doing …what sort of team selection was that with Noble at the heart of the most lifeless 45 minutes we have seen from a Hammers team this season.
He admitted how wrong he ad got it by substituting the captain at half time decided that he would give Yarmolenko a run out along with Lanzini for Jarrod Bowen rather than trust Said Benrahma.
Odd that he appears to prefer two 30 year old plus players for a guy who we are expecting to pay £30 million for in the summer.
On a day when a really offensive performance was required we instead saw a line-up aimed, it seemed, at preventing Brighton scoring.
The Allardyce ‘respect the point’ mantra came back to mind in a season when we thought all that negative thinking had been kicked down the road.
Frankly, we were shocking in the first and for some of the second half being given the run around by a Brighton team who play pretty stuff but in all honesty ain’t all that.
Moyes’ selection gave them the opportunity to call the shots against a Hammers team who in that first half looked incredibly leggy.
Yarmolenko’s second half appearance was a relief with the Ukranian looking good while Lanzini created a bit more spark.
But all in all the manager’s team selection gave Brighton an afternoon they should never have been allowed to enjoy.
Poor day at the office Moysie!
Moyes rating 4
A 4 is too generous Hugh. Got it completely wrong against a team that had only won 2 games out of 15 yet bizarrely selected 5 at the back instead of 3 with attacking wingbacks. Noble should retire now. He offers nothing and lacks any creativity with no pace. As for Haller why would any Manager continue to play someone who cannot hold up play. never wins any headers and strike rate is awful. To pick players who have zero creativity yet leave Benharama, Lanzini and Yarmo on the bench, shows a complete lack of ambition and step backwards. Awful performance and a huge disappointment. No use of the channels and what was the point of short corners which came to nothing when so many of our goals have come from set pieces?
1st time posting though I have checked this site out for years
I’ve liked what Moyes has brought to the team
Though this has been limited due to the money invested and signings can be due to luck because of lack of investment or great buying
I give him the benefit of the doubt
He has installed in my opinion a quality coaching team
There’s the plus side
Tonight I was shocked with the starting line up
We play the big teams and the majority of other teams with a 3 at the back formation with wing backs, yet we have Brighton at home and play 5 defenders and nobes (who I luv but is past his best)
I can’t understand that, benrahma should have started and we should play our fast counter attacking football
For me the manager has to take this one on the chin
I’ve given him a 2 boys
2 it is!
Moyes is clueless tactically! This game against lowly Brighton demanded an offensive formation with Benrhama playing for once in his natural position as left-sided attacker & Lanzini in midfield.
Mark Noble: please retire immediately because you are an embarrassment now!
Don’t renew Moyes’ contract Hammers fans deserve better!
Kevin sums it up perfectly. I have seen some good in Moyes as I’m not a fan but today shows why he was sacked at manure and took sunderland down and why nobody gave him a job other than our cheapskate board . Moyes and GSB OUT.
He has these crazy lapses where a mass of negativity enters his head and the outcome is the team he put out to start the match. What the hell he feared from Brighton only he knows but we basically gave them 45 minutes to be out of sight and a player advantage in having the useless Haller up to..Until Antonio and Masuaku are back or we spend some cash the slide will continue.
Agreed strange team and formation we must attack lesser teams.
Why Haller
Why noble
Why is lanzini not in team
Looks like he has settled for mid table
Agree. Reality is this is not a top 6 club and unlikely a bottom 6. If we had been offered a mid-table finish at the end of 2021, during the restart of 2020, everyone would be onboard.
Moyes needs time to acquire players of his choosing and implement change.
I doubt very much that he wanted SB.
That was a disgrace . We all knew what to expect when we saw the team sheet . In an album full of awful performances the one today by Noble was the worst by a very long way . Set up for a quick counterattack …. really . Noble cannot run and Johnson is a fish out of water in that position . Haller is lazy and Benharama must be wondering why he signed .. Moyes cannot be allowed to carry on picking teams like this . He is totally clueless . To give him 4 means he got something right . Perhaps someone cleverer than me can tell me what . I was beginning to think that we were pushing on but the last 5 games has shown that Moyes is a Dinosaur. COYI
4 is more than generous. What hold has Haller got over Moyes that he keeps playing 90 minutes. Why don’t we just tell him football has been cancelled again and to stay at home. He’s too lazy to actually check the news. To think I turned down a walk in the park with the missus to watch this. If I had known Moyes had picked a team to enable Brighton’s players to get paid for having a walk in the park. What was the gameplan, to make Brighton look like Real Madrid. Moyes clearly didn’t want Benrahma and scared he might create something if he plays. I thought we might have turned a corner under him but this cries out of his first stint when he set up to get a home point against Stoke. I think that performance then might have woken our hopeless owners up and I’m hoping today might do the same. Nothing like entertaining us in a pandemic.
A 4 ? You sore more like a minus 4, this is Moyes, negative poor team selection and game management , he replies on an Antonio or Arnie to hold the ball up beat 2 players and score, he has no idea on how to attack as a team, he has been the same for 25 years, never won anything and never will.
We have a very good squad with a championship manager bring on Eddie Howe, a good fit before we slip into the bottom 8
LOL
You are stating in your final paragraph that we have a championship manager. Wow. You know how to save the best for last. Now get yourself a beer and celebrate.😱
Minus 4 would be more appropriate what a negative team selection.
You could lose faith In a manager after his recent tactics.
The plan was to hit them on the break with those well known speed machines Noble and Haller 😉
As much as I respect mark noble he must never EVER start a game again. Sub yes but that it. Haller what can I say drop him put Yarmo in the centre. And Lanzini must now be a starter. Two hard games coming up. With todays mindset and performance we lose both. Moyes done good job but must be braver particularly at home. Think we we will be in bottom half of table pretty soon unless some ambition is shown. I hope I’m wrong.
I think you’re being very kind, Hugh, both in your ratings of players and manager. We were absolutely awful. Pedestrian, devoid of ideas, energy, spark, against a team we should’ve destroyed… Haller was very poor again. The worst thing is that I think he’s actually trying!! Bowen looked like he was frustrated at being the only person in our team expected to create anything. Noble is at best an impact sub (and I love the guy) and why do we insist on playing 3 touches before we pass??
We didn’t deserve to draw that. We were awful. 5 at the back against Brighton? And don’t give me this “we should respect everyone” rubbish (Moyes). How are we supposed to develop and challenge for Europe when we let others play?
Very frustrated.
4…..must be feeling generous, this was a shocker.. Noble. OUT, HALLER OUT and if he continues with these painful selections Moyes will have his detractors saying MOYES OUT as well.. Pathetic.. We need miracles v Southampton and Everton.
Shades of his disastrious managerial time at MU, soon as MN plays its 10 v 12, like putting a hasbean boxer in the ring, 4 points dropped against CP and BHA, by a dour emotionalist safe sweaty sock, the game was crying for SB, better to be on your feet fighting than on your needs praying Moyes
Kevin and your post sum it up perfectly.
Turgid. Negative. Mediocre. Disappointing… again
Saul, Moyes really is his own worst enemy at times. We’re at home playing a team that’s only won twice all season and sitting just one point above the relegation zone. How could he possibly put out a team with only 2 attacking players? What was he afraid of? It wasn’t Brazil, it was Brighton. Just as he starts to win people round and silence his critics he goes right back to square 1. Deserves every epithet you’ve used and more in the same vein.
You’re right, Mooro. I really do try to be positive about our season as it’s a damn sight better than it has been in recent years but we really had an opportunity to hang on to the coat tails of those teams above us today and instead he did what he is renowned for; be defensive and negative. I think he’ll always keep us mid-table, which is what the owners probably want and maybe what we need this season but in the next couple of years i imagine most fans would like to see us challenging the top 6. I just don’t see it with him at the helm and that isn’t just based on today but on the last 6 games.
