Moyes v Pellegrini transfer fees – the agony and ecstasy

This may be the most pointless piece I’ve written but on a very warm Bank Holiday as I wandered around town looking for, and finding, some nice book and album bargains my mind wandered towards our last two managers.

It really is difficult, without finding some references, to discover the depth of poverty signings that Pellegrini managed in his time.

You then look at David Moyes’ transfer market activities and you realise how fortunate we all are that the board asked him to return and, more to the point perhaps, that he accepted.

Few words are necessary but here the two managers signings to demonstrate how well off we are that Pellegrini was finally fired and that the Scot returned despite the reservations of many:

  • Pelle signings:
  • Seb Haller £45 million
  • Andriy Yarmolenko £18 million
  • Issa Diop £22 million
  • Lukasz Fabianski £7 million
  • Fabian Balbuena £4 million
  • Jack Wilshere free but £100k a week wages
  • Felipe Anderson £35 million
  • Pablo Fornals £25 million
  • Samier Nasri free
  • Carlos Sanchez free
  • Lucas Perez free
  • Albian Ajeti £8 million
  • and the unforgettably bad keeper Roberto who was free but should have paid us to join the club.
  • That’s a grand total of £164 million and if you include those Wilshere wages it tops out at at nearly £180.
  • Of those Fabianski has been a huge success, Fornals came of age under David Moyes whilst Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena have been reasonable although at £22 million you probably expect more from Diop.

David Moyes – during his two spells at the club has brought in:

  • Jordan Hugill at £8 million
  • Jarrod Bowen at £22 million
  • Said Benrahma at £25 million
  • Tomas Soucek  at £22 million
  • Vlad Coufal at £5.5 million
  • Craig Dawson at £2.5 million
  • That works out to a grand total of £85 million.

With the smallest recruitment team in the Premier League – as he explained – he hasn’t done bad eh?

  1. Think Pellegrini also brought inn Zabaleta, which if so would be a big one, of few, on the plus side

  2. Slavens Bilic bought in Zabaletta in May 2017.

  3. Think you have got too much time on your hands. Pelle made some good signings that are still here and done a brilliant job. Can we stop the Moyes appreciation society because he inherited a good squad that needed time to gel. I’ll be the first one to pat him on the back at the end of next season if we have been as successful. For me, Moyes is too cautious and cost us alot of points playing negatively.

    • 15 or so stories a day and too much time on my hands LOL Blimey. Not allowed a couple of hours off on bank Holiday?. And perhaps you would like to tell me with what you disagree other than not especially liking Moyes Phil.

    • Can’t believe Moyes bashers like you still exist personally. I’m Flabbergasted by it.

    • By “brilliant”, what do you mean? None have been brilliant, in my view. Do you actually mean value for money. If so, Fab to one side, which signings do you mean? Balbuena, maybe. Diop? Not at £23m, when compared to Craig Dawson (£2m). Anderson? Had a 15 or so-game spell where he looked really good, but not brilliant. Since then, he’s been an absolute embarrassment. Haller? He didn’t want to get his hands dirty in the way effective PL strikers often have to. So, no and no. Absolutely no need to get into the details of Wilshere, Sanchez, Ajeti and Perez. The only signing that hasn’t worked out that Pellegrini, and his completely inept team, can be forgiven for is Yarmalenko, due to the injuries he’s had.
So, worth asking the question again, in my view: which signings of Pellegrini’s were “brilliant”, and what do you mean by “brilliant”?
Moyes, who, as you might be able to tell, I think is a proper football manager. He’s proven that by keeping West Ham in the PL whilst having to deal with the fallout of the brilliant signings Pellegrini, who is not, in my view, a proper football manager, made.

      • Diop has all the attributes to develop into a top class central defender, his price was based upon his potential and age, in defensive terms he is still a baby, we must be patient with him, Ogbonna stated that typically your best years at centre half comes after age 30, so Diop has a long way to go. Let’s not be too scathing in the here and now and enjoy watching him blossom under our current back room team, who knows what he’s going to be worth by his late twenties.

        • Fair point. And I forgot Fornals too. Another good, but not brilliant (yet!), Pellegrini signing. Looking forward to seeing Fornals blossom.

    • I agree, several of pellers signings were very good. Even Anderson in his first season. The rest were ****e.

It’s a bit much to say moyes has cost us points when we had the biggest points total ever. 🙄

I can recall maybe 3 or 4 games where he set us up too cautious and 3 of those were top sides , so some excuse.

I believe he has learnt his lesson given the results in the main. It’s not like every win was 1 0

  4. Dont forget the managers wages. Pellegrini was on 10 million a year wages wasn’t he?

  5. When Mr Moyes kept West Ham up, he did an interview. He said, that if he was still at the club that he would sort out the defence. I’d been watching the hammers v Chelsea match on TV . The hammers may have won 1-0 but that was lucky the defence was very poor. After seeing that I thought great West Ham have a manager.
However they got rides of him and replaced him with a man who spent money . As I was watching the Arsenal player on a £100k a week and had seen that the gunners got rid of him an ex England player for free. I could not see why the hammers wanted him. Half way through the season Mr Moyes comes back and saves the hammers again.
Then West Ham have the best season in years and get into Europe. However as much as I would have liked to have kept Mr Lingard at £40 million that’s just too much. It also mean that Mr Moyes is now three years behind his planning for the club.

  6. Every club has its successes and failures in the transfer market. I wonder if anyone keeps a percentage record of duds compared to successes. If so, I suspect that our club would probably be not much worse than any in the prem.
